Dead Like Me- I've Met The Grim Reaper, And She's Kind of Annoying

Just caught this on Sky One Mix, 18 year old girl, specialist subjects sarcasm and looking pissed off, dies, finds that some people on passing become 'Grim Reapers', it's their job to ease the passing of people who die in a sudden and violent way, they take the soul just before the person dies, the person goes onto whatever it is they go on to, and we all learn and grow and hug.

So the main character is George, who dies when she gets hit by the toilet-seat from the disintegrating Mir space station. There's various other reapers, including the loveable Italian uncle-figure and mentor, Rube, played by Mandy 'My name is Inigo Montoya' Patinkin who teaches her how to do her job, and there's the computer-generated Gravelings, who might be the bad guys of the whole thing.

Although I like the concept, and the first episode was appropriately zippy and funny, and with a number of those fast cutaways so beloved of shows like Spaced or Scrubs, I'm not sure how they can spin this out to a full series, how many different ways is George, who as a reaper looks different to how she did when she was 'alive', going to be able to bump into her old family? As this show seems disinclined to go Buffy on us, how far are they going to take storylines involving the Gravelings? And the last ten minutes of the pilot turned of the sarcasm for a really sour dollop of sugary smaltz about the mysteries of life and death and how people dying isn't fair, but it's all part of some great plan.

Anyone else seen this?

Whatever you do, don't follow that thin and delicate thread of shmaltz to the gigantic and terrifiying huge yarn-ball of shmaltz that lies in the black and beating heart of the remaining episodes of the first season of this utterly regrettable show.

It's Ol' "Pants" Patinkin that kills it for me. The more I see him eat waffles, the more I want to punch his teeth out.

Also, everything else in that show kills it for me.
