The so-called “failure” of the WTO meetings in Cancun was actually a victory for developing countries. I’ve had enough of the vomitus lies spewed by western media, so I am posting this now and will follow up on the details later. Doha was a near total defeat for the poor nations. The pressure on the discussions at Cancun was on proposals brought by the rich nations (the four Singapore proposals). The EU pushed hardest for these issues, and then tried to drop two to make it appear as a compromise. But nobody in the developed world wanted these proposals. This was the area where negotiations failed, not agriculture or cotton. Pascal Lamy says the WTO is medieval, why? Because the WTO is still slightly democratic and poor nations can stand up together for their rights? Yes, and he hates this because he is a corporate whore/slave. The western agenda is the primary aim of the WTO. What developing countries want, how they feel their economies should be run is not an issue, the poor countries go into the WTO on the defensive, they are there to try to limit the damage of rich world proposals. So when you hear that the talks have failed, they have, for the rich. But the poor will probably be made to suffer for this. However if they can stick together the poor nations can protect themselves. Who knows? |
