Did anyone else see this last night? Try as I might to not hold any preconceived notions about them I couldn't help but feel slightly perterbed by them, not only by their methods but because, if the program was to be believed, there didn't seem to be any pastoral care set up for the kids that they managed to turn towards God.
The Eden Project.
The Eden Project send teams into depressed parts of Machester, targetting children and teenagers to 'spread the word about Jesus', which mainly seems to be that if you believe in Jesus then everythings going to be great, and if you don't then you'll burn in hell. The show was interspersed with video diraries from two teenage girls, one of which SHed, who had joined the project early on. They didn't seem to be getting much by way of support from the Project, the only time we saw one of them with the Project leader was when she'd phoned to ask her for a lift home from school as she'd just got suspended, but they didn't seem to be receiving any emotional support, which they certainly weren't receiving from their useless parents, by the end of the program they seemed to be where they were before, just with the extra pressure of wondering why they weren't conforming like 'good' Christians.
I don't think the program made the Eden Project itself out to be a bad thing, but did seem to question whether the people running the outreach courses had the necessary skills to work with children and teens. God forbid if one of the kids were to actually seek comfort and advice because they thought they might be gay... |
