When the God Squad Came to Town

Did anyone else see this last night? Try as I might to not hold any preconceived notions about them I couldn't help but feel slightly perterbed by them, not only by their methods but because, if the program was to be believed, there didn't seem to be any pastoral care set up for the kids that they managed to turn towards God.

The Eden Project.

The Eden Project send teams into depressed parts of Machester, targetting children and teenagers to 'spread the word about Jesus', which mainly seems to be that if you believe in Jesus then everythings going to be great, and if you don't then you'll burn in hell. The show was interspersed with video diraries from two teenage girls, one of which SHed, who had joined the project early on. They didn't seem to be getting much by way of support from the Project, the only time we saw one of them with the Project leader was when she'd phoned to ask her for a lift home from school as she'd just got suspended, but they didn't seem to be receiving any emotional support, which they certainly weren't receiving from their useless parents, by the end of the program they seemed to be where they were before, just with the extra pressure of wondering why they weren't conforming like 'good' Christians.

I don't think the program made the Eden Project itself out to be a bad thing, but did seem to question whether the people running the outreach courses had the necessary skills to work with children and teens. God forbid if one of the kids were to actually seek comfort and advice because they thought they might be gay...

Meant to watch this but missed it. D'oh! Are the Eden Project the same 'outreach group' that sent a load of young Christians out to Ibiza to attempt to change the island's 'spiritual identity'?

Depends what type of Christians they are Lady. Gay can be a very 'in' thing with some of the hip, young evangelists.

With the evangelists? Nahh, never seen the two mix... but I guess it'd depend on the type of gayness too. Angsty, struggly celibacy seems to go down well with some...

It could only have been NGM or The Message Tribe. In this case the latter.

And yeah, that Radio Times article has it on the nose. Lots of nice clothes and style and music and video games.

Silent struggle and slightly geeky homosexuality mixed with almost exclusively female friends went down really well in the local Christian community but I did grow up in apathyville and everyone seemed quite hypocritical about it. But then I always steered well clear of the whole thing... people kept trying to convert me and I disliked it intensely. Plus it all seemed a little twee- too many video cameras and acoustic guitars, God always seemed a bit dark and mysterious to me. Why on earth anyone would want to make a deity approachable is beyond me, surely you're meant to be a bit scared of them.

Quick at work reply:

having just had a rather intense but doomed relationship with a christian, I was reminded of her attitude in the Eden project's members attitude. Notice how the Dready Eden lady quickly changes her statement that Jesus is THE way to A way whilst speaking to the council social officer. Hmmm, theology 101. Is Hell a tool to keep the sheep in line?

I was enthralled by the direct camera material of the two girls, this to me was powerful stuff that would open the eyes of many people to teh psychology behind such episodes and neurosises. Even the Eden project workers.

watching part 2 for sure
