Quitely Fest 2003

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
13:53 / 17.09.03
Well, today, September 17, we are treated to three deluxe renditions of Quitely. To wit:

1) Endless Nights: His Destiny story is completely gorgeous. It's a bit light as a story goes, but who gives a fuck. It's gorgeous. Water-colored. Has anyone seen the Endless poster he did? With Michael Jackson as Desire? It was reprinted in that Endless Nights preview book last week. Gorgeous. Also, if anyone's gotten the book, in Quitely's bio, does anyone recognize that little drawing of all those people that he did and where I might be able to find it? It's probably just a little notebook sketch but it looks GardenerGalaTacular.

2) Absolute Authority Vol. 2. Although he was often mired by shitty inking, I still love an ass-load of the work he did on this book (that opening spread of the Giant Man dude with his legs shorn off and teensy tiny guys walking around on him). And we get bonus super-sized Art Adams. Who hasn't been waiting for that since Uncanny X-Men Annual #10?

3) New X-Men Vol. 2. Oh man, am I glad they started digitally darkening his pencils. The details you get in the last issues of Riot are out of control. And they've got a bonus making of section with two chunks of the script to the final issue of Riot and there are [Classified!] spots in the script that are [Encrypted!], i.e. the part where Xorn pushes the cement truck ("He doesn't [Encryption Intiated!]"). In otherwords, Grant explicitly pointed out that Xorn is using his [Encrypted!] powers. No QQ Death Scene script though. That would have required way too much [Encryption!] I guess.

So, Quitely fans, sell some DVDs and enjoy.

Oooh. I'll have to pick up that hardcover today.

Yeah, that Endless group shot portrait is truly amazing. I think I might have to shell out for the hardcover this week instead of buying the softcover in 9 months.

Can anyone find the New X-Men hardcover on Amazon? It doesn't appear to be up, but maybe I missed it. And also, I haven't usually ordered comics right when they're released from Amazon, so does anyone know how long it usually takes for them to get trades shipped out, because I ordered the new 100 Bullets trade, which was released two weeks ago, and Amazon still has yet to ship it.

so, wait, NXM Vol 2 covers until the end of "Riot," right? which means that Vol 3 will include "Murder," "Assault on Weapon Plus," "Planet X," and the final arc?

I was actually gonna post that. It goes right through Murder! So we get that gorgeous Jimenez page with Emma and her corpsal students behind her.

I bought the NXM hardcover today. If you happen to live in NYC, you really ought to buy it at Forbidden Planet, because it (like all Marvel hardcovers) are $10 off the cover price. They have some kind of deal where they get a huge price break.

As someone else says, it goes from the Xorn solo issue right up through the end of Murder At The Mansion. It's really nicely put together, I recommend it. As with the previous hardcover, Igor Kordey's art looks much better on the bigger pages and glossy paper.

They were wise to include the Murder story in this, because it's a more logical conclusion to the middle of the trilogy that the Riot. Also, it makes more sense in terms of page count. The first hc is 14 issues, this one is 15, the last one will be 13.

The Sandman hardcover is really nice, I don't regret buying it. But although the Quitely art in the Destiny story is great, the story is indeed very light on story.

well, to be fair, it's Destiny. he's not terribly interesting on his own. kind of quiet, you know?

yeah, Riot flows smoothly into Murder, which then has a nice break at the end, and allows Vol 3 to begin with Scott getting drunk.

Patrick MM, The HC is at Amazon as "not yer released", but they might be able to ship by now. Try searching for New X-Men Vol. 2
by Grant Morrison, John Paul Leon, Frank Quitely (Illustrator)

Its somehow not clearly filed and you'll get the TPs first. This is at $20.99 and check for the "Edition: Hardcover" legend.

This might work.

Does anybody know of any bookstore in San Francisco that may have it on discount like in NYC's Forbidden Planet??? THANKS!!!

My understanding now is that any store that orders Marvel hardcovers in bulk get a significant discount, allowing them to sell them at $19-21 per copy. So if you shop at any stores that do serious volume business, then you're in for a sweet mark-down.

Thanks, Sebastian, that looks to be it. Though considering they don't even have a picture of the book yet, it could be a while before they ship it out.

Just so you know, I'm pretty sure that they rush-shipped this book and possibly only to the direct market, looking to capitalize on the 146 interest in the title. It may not have been shipped out to places like Amazon, as it was originally scheduled for, I'm pretty sure, at least next month if not November.

Thanks Flux, muy father is in SF these days, so I might ask him pay a visit to Hibbs' ComixExperience.

Benjamin, you are most likely right, but in the past I have updated the guys there after ordering by telling them "this booka HAS been released you should be able to ship it by now". And yes, they did it.
