The Details:

CHANNEL: #barbelith

SERVER: irc.webchat.org

Come in and talk shit about pop culture, you marvelous fuckers. I'm online NOW.

I lack the savy to set up a Java/cgi client, if anyone would care to do that it would be great. Otherwise there are tons of IRC clients flying around; I like mIRC.

Em, there already is a chat function at Pocket Barbelith - here: http://forums.prospero.com/n/main.asp?webtag=barbelith&nav=start (sorry, no time to do a link.
It doesn't get used much, admittedly.

Does mIRC still have cool rooms where you can download lots of pictures of Britney Spears.. I would love to chat all day but I know that mIRC and those like it will be banned without a doubt - my work has problems with porn..

I thought it might be nice to use irc because it's the closest thing I can think of to a standard and Delphi fourms make me want to punch my computer. Seriously.

It's a shame, but I too have work restrictions which prevent me.

Same here. Alas no chat for me.

Work restrictions here, too. Boo, hiss.

Will investigate when I get home and can download a decent OSX IRC client (any suggestions?).

I've always liked IRC as a format for realtime chat. No idea why, it just works for me... so you'll probably see me there.

aw, man, another way to waste time at work... I'll be there.

Ummm... I dont mean to sound as dense as i will, but how to you get to the barbelith bit of it? I got as far as irc.whatever.org, but no further.

I like chatrooms, albeit with only a small experience of them. Would it be possible for Tom to add a link in either the Underground or main site?

I think that'd help it get used.

Agh, why can't I make this work!? Can't even find the barbelith channel on irc.webchat.org. Do I need to download something???

Help?

I hate all hightech things.
By the way, was there ever a Barbelith room at Habbo hotel??

Axel Lambert
18:15 / 16.09.03
Hey there is!!! But I'm as alone there as I am on the delphi chat, apparently.

Papess

I believe the answer is yes.

Axel Lambert

To which question?? I did find the Habbo room, was owned by a "Orlando".

That server is not on my list. I've got a random IRC-chat server, is that the same thing? I haven't used this thing since 3.2 first came out.

Oh, and a decent OSX IRC client (any suggestions?) - beats me. They all seem to be shit, or not free. Fire has IRC support but I think it's a bit dodgy. I have one called AthenaIRC which works, and there's a replacement to that called Minerva which I've not tried since the early alphas.

Right now I'm using text-based irc that I installed with Fink. It works, and it's not going to crash on me.

Linus Dunce

Ooh, text-based IRC, that sounds right up my alley. But you're on a Mac, aren't you Fridge?

Has anyone got it working yet? I'd try it myself but I don't want to d/l yet another app for nothing.

w1rebaby
23:54 / 16.09.03
It's a *nix client (here) but I don't think there's a Windows version. mIRC is pretty small and generally considered the best. It's worth having around just in case.

I use Colloquy. It's crap as far as text commands go but it's a decent free little chat app for IRC on OS X.

And I'm hitting the same error messages on IRCle that fridge is. Why Webchat.org?

The Strobe
06:03 / 17.09.03
Yeah, I got the error message. I've got IRCle which is all a bit veiled for me; used mIRC on a PC, and textwise am used to BitchX...

a brief guide to getting in on the mirc action:

1. If you do not already have an IRC client, download one. As examples, mIRC is simple enough, or you can try Trillian to combine IRC with AIM, MSN, Yahoo and ICQ. There are others.

2. Connect to irc.webchat.org.

3. Join #barbelith

4. Chat. If nobody is there, hang around. All you need to do is leave it idling in the background and check occasionally.

5. Post your logs here for posterity... even if it's just you complaining that nobody else is there!

The Strobe
14:05 / 17.09.03
Yes, but I cannot join the channel because of the error message mentioned above.

gridley
18:45 / 17.09.03
Ah, I see the problem now. Perhaps if we used irc.stratics.com as the server?

Tryphena Absent
18:51 / 17.09.03
Look this is lovely and everything but can't we just use undernet? That way the server's unimportant and will already be on any mIRC list. Version 6.2 tells me the server's you people are suggesting don't exist.

I'm gonna jump onto to irc.undernet.org tonight and look for/beget #barbelith. If anyone's game, I'll see you there.
