Damnable AVI File Problem

All right, I just spent the better part of this week downloading an AVI of the movie Equilibrium. I just tried to play it, and it's being treated as an audio file. What's up with that? The type is .avi and it's some 700 megs.

Do I perhaps need a codec, whatever the hell that is?

Probably. Try going to the DivX site, that's the most common one. Or, the file may just be fucked, this does happen with P2P downloads whether by design or by simple fuckup.

Just buck up and go rent your porn like they did in the old days. Its not that embarrassing.

Get VLC. It's free, will run almost everything and there is a version for most OSs. Best of all, it's Spyware free.

A codec is a small piece of scripting that deals with decoding audio/visual information. If you're running the file through Real Player, you aren't missing any codecs, otherwise RP would tell you that you are and offer to download them for you.

In my reasonably wide experience of downloaded material, this actually sounds like a bad encoding, which is to say the front end has been misencoded. The file might tell you it's an AVI, but that may not actually be the case, especially as far your player is concerned.

So, assuming trying a number different players doesn't work, you just need to re-encode the front end for your player. Make a copy of your AVI file just in case things go wrong, then download AVI FourCC. Start it up then use the elipse button to navigate to your file. Fill both the Description Code and the Used Code box with DivX, then hit apply.

DivX, and I believe Real Player as well, should now play the film without a hitch.

Yeah, or you could just go and see the damn film or even rent it, rather than spending vast quantities of online time and effort.
