Pilger TV show to air, JP calls for full inquiry into Iraq War

Norman Mailer recently broke the great silence about the true direction of Bush's America when he wondered if his country had entered a "pre-fascist atmosphere". In Washington, I put this to Ray McGovern, a former senior CIA officer, distinguished as a Soviet specialist and cold warrior, a man who counts himself a personal friend of George Bush, the president's father, who said: "I hope [Mailer] is right, because there are others who are saying we are already in a fascist mode... when you see how this war [on terror] is being conducted."

From Pilger's Website at Carlton.

More:

It is time the issue of "our" criminality entered the public arena - before a media-endowed respectability is allowed to settle over the occupation in Iraq. "There never was a time," said Blair in his obsequious speech to Congress, "when the power of America was so necessary or so misunderstood or when, except in the most general sense, a study of history provides so little instruction for our present day."

Stunning comment, that last one. Ignorant, as well as mendacious.

John Pilger's latest documentary film will screen on ITV on Monday 22nd September. Unless ITV gets cold feet.

I somehow get the feeling that I will not be seeing that one on this side of the pond.

It seems unlikely, unless PBS pick it up and pretend it's about cheesemaking in Lebanon, Illinois. You probably didn't get 'Palestine is still the Issue' either - but both can be had through the site, along with accomanying articles.

Slightly off topic check 'Jeremy Hardy vs the Israeli Army' He's put something good together about the occupied terretories and if you can't see it in the cinema then it'll be in the video shops soon enough.

Bumping this cos I just watched the Pilger documentary.

Excellent stuff - didn't contain much I didn't already know, but still, put stuff forward in a really powerful way, using, like, facts and stuff, with none of the usual fucking around.

Largely preaching to the converted in my case, but surely essential viewing for anyone who's not already a card-carrying lefty pinko traitor..

I can do PAL VHS copies if anybody fancies one.

I wouldn't mind one, Riz... I never remember when TV programmes are on, cos I try and avoid it. (Will pay in CDs if you want... PM me!)

Anyone else seen the Hardy thing yet? I heard him doing a piece on it (the experience, not the film) on the ever-lovely-though-currently-somewhat-embattled Radio 4 a while back... it was good, and I'm looking forward to the film.

I really enjoyed the Pilger documentary. Nicely paced, some fantastic interviews and the conclusion was a lot of fun but yeah, I already knew most of it as well! I'm going to glance around the papers in a minute and see if there's any criticism of it.

Interesting snippet on Clinton and the Taliban. More:

link: In the second week of December 1997, a Taliban delegation led by Mullah Muhammad Ghaus arrived at a five-star hotel in Houston, Texas. Their itinerary for the next few days included shopping at the city's best supermarkets; for which they did not show any particular interest, except that Mullah Ghaus bought a comb. However, the Taliban delegates were quite excited after visiting the zoo and the Nasa Space Centre. They also had dinner with Marty Miller, Vice-President if the US Oil Company UNOCAL, admiring his swimming pool and comfortable house.
