A call for Amish anarchism, "shunning" those who collaborate with governments...
quote:Shunning, however, comes with a price.

The Amish only shun a true excommunicate. Before the entire community, including family members, cease working with, talking to, and noticing another Amish person, the shunned one must not only be a baptized member of the church, but must also be an adult who has made a public commitment to follow the regulations of the church – and then reneged. Those who live among the Amish, but never formally joined the church and stray from its teachings, are never shunned.

The lesson for the anarchist, then, is not to shun those who cannot understand the enmity
between human freedom and the State. Before one can shun, one must at least try to educate.
Consider the case of an anarchist I knew who was out to dinner with a friend. The friend introduced the anarchist to a fellow diner who was employed by the municipal government and was running for office. “So,” said the anarchist, “you're a double parasite?”

Rude? Perhaps. Truth is often impolite. Beyond good and bad manners, the anarchist did his duty. He seized the opportunity to enlighten: Maybe – just maybe – he got both his friend and the parasite thinking about the nature of the State. If either were offended by the anarchist's question ...well, then, who needs friends so stupid?

...a survival guide for police harrassment...
quote:Sometimes a bad cop will invade your private space or even touch you, as a tactic to establish control. Politely ask him or her to desist. If he or she refuses, he or she can be arrested later on charges of assault and/or battery. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TOUCH THE OFFICER OR INVADE HIS OR HER PRIVATE SPACE. THIS CAN GET YOU BEATEN OR KILLED.

It may be helpful to say something to the effect of “I saw someone a moment ago with a video camera.” Being caught on tape is a bad cop's worst fear. Keep in mind also that most patrol cars are now equipped with video cameras which record police-citizen interactions. Try to stay in plain view of this device.

I have been told by representatives of the company Pre-Paid Legal Services (www.prepaidlegalservices.com) that they give their customers vehicle decals which state that they have 24/7 access to legal counsel. Having such a sign on your car may cause the police to exercise greater restraint. Organizations such as the American Automobile Association (www.AAA.com) provide bail and other legal help to their members. These services are worth investigating.

Keep your hands in plain view at all times. Notify the patrolman before you reach for anything, such as your wallet. If at all possible, make sure that there are witnesses nearby who observe the interaction between you and the officer. This can often prevent a “frame-up” attempt on his or her part, such as planting drugs in your vehicle.

If the police insist on searching your automobile, you are not obligated to grant them permission. Doing so could adversely affect your chances in court, if it comes to that. In certain cases, where they believe there is “probable cause,” they may search your car without a warrant, but make it clear that this is being done without your consent.

Never refuse to sign a ticket; this can get you arrested. If you believe the citation is unfair then you can always fight it in court later. If the cops want you to take a blood, breath or urine test because they suspect you are driving under the influence, then refusing to do so can get your license suspended.

...a call for aesthetic diversity on corporate radio...
quote: Most people make do with the music and opinions they learned in high school and college. Why challenge themselves?

Why listen to alternative radio when current radio is good enough?

Walker keeps his actual argument brief:

I am aware that today's radio marketplace is open enough that the stations that survive in it are meeting somebody's needs. I wish such stations no ill. I have no desire to drive those two oxymoron's, “classic rock” and “young country,” from the air. I can coexist with “easy listening,” with “adult contemporary,” with even that unlistenable concoction called “smooth jazz.” (That's like calling Scientology “smooth Judaism.” But what kind of musical desert contains only those brands of broadcasting?

A freer media landscape, shorn of tight controls, is possible – one that would allow us greater freedom to choose, to create, and to escape.

Though Walker may look down on some normal stuff (Kenny G and “smooth jazz,” for instance), he simply asks the powers to make a little more room for a little more diversity. Unlike many with his tastes, he's not asking for government subsidies (NPR listeners may be a bit nonplused with his unconventional discussion of the politics and economics – and aesthetics and ideologies – of their beloved government-subsidized, grant-happy, listener-supported radio). He's asking for freedom.

...a scary article on foreknowledge of the Tower Day attacks (by the fellow who wrote "You Are Being Lied To")....
quote:In what might be a case of ESP, Florida Governor Jeb Bush – who is, of course, the president's brother – called up his state's National Guard on September 7, 2001. Executive Order 01-261 repeatedly makes reference to the Guard aiding law enforcement and emergency-management personnel in the event of “civil disturbance.” Section 3 expressly tasks the Guard with aiding security at Florida's ports due to the “the potential massive damage to life and property that may result from an act of terrorism at a Florida port, [and] the necessity to protect life and property from such acts of terrorism...”38 Odd that such an order was signed into effect four days before the terrorist attacks.

Domain Names Revealed Terror Attacks
From mid-June to mid-July 2000, at least seventeen Internet domain names were registered which indicated when and where the attacks were to occur. Among the Web addresses: “attackontwintowers.com,” “nycterroriststrike.com,” “pearlharborinmanhattan.com,” “terrorattack2001.com,” “worldtradetowerattack.com,” and “wterroristattack2001.com.” Unfortunately, the names were allowed to expire, so tracking the people who bought them may not be easy.

Counterterrorism and security expert Neil Livingstone - author of America the Vulnerable and other similar books – was tipped off about the names by someone at a domain name registrar. (In the summer of 2000, around 90 companies were registering domains. To protect his source, Livingstone is refusing to name the individual or the company.) When domains that were registered are allowed by their owners to expire, the names are announced as being available again, and this is apparently how they were first discovered. (Beginning September 11, 2001, some of these domain names have been purchased again, presumably by different people).

Said Livingstone, “It's unbelievable that they [the registration company] would register these domain names, probably without any comment to the FBI. If they did make a comment to the FBI, it's unbelievable that the FBI didn't react to it.”
