Microbiologist / WMD experts dropping like flies

Did anyone else catch a report in (of all places) the Daily Mirror, UK, about the number of senior scientists involved in WMD and bio-weapons research who have died, many in fairly sinister circumstances, over the past two years??

I'll have to look for a link, but for the David Kelly conspiracy nuts, it's a goldmine. Something like 22 dead bodies, at least 10 of them murdered or involved in mysterious plane crashes.

I'll be back when I find the link

I remember this from another board.

The statistic is meaningless unless you also know
- how many microbiologists etc there are actually are in the world, for starters
- what the death rate has been over that period for people of that age in those countries (loads of the casualties seemed to be in Russia, for some reason)

It's also not much use unless there's an indication that those people actually were involved in WMD research (otherwise, even if it was an unusual number of deaths, there could be a secret war between pharmaceutical companies or something...). I don't believe the original article actually indicated that though I don't have the link to hand.

Basically I didn't find it very convincing when I saw it. If there's any extra evidence I'd be interested to see it of course.

Why are we surprised that a story like that is in the Daily Mirror? That's what the popular press is for.

I don't think there were very many microb's in the world to start with. I think the article is referring to the one's right at the top.

fridge is right, there were an awful lot of murders in Russia...

Although, to their credit, even the Mirror pointed out that the reasons for these deaths were quite likely corporate, or perhaps a result of senior scientists being requested by villains to do dirty work for them and then getting their just-desserts when they refused.

Still, interesting.

I'm reminded of the whole Marconi thing in the '80s... which led to all manner of conspiracy theories and also (offtopic) a great starting point for one of the classic Delano Hellblazer stories (/offtopic).

Still not sure what to think of that... yes, it all depends how many were important/how many there were to start with. Further Googling is reuqired, I fear, before I can come up with anything even remotely resembling an opinion...

(getting way offtopic now) the Fear Machine thingy... not sure which issues, but it was the one with JC hanging out with the travellers (/getting way offtopic now)

I'm also reminded of a thing I read (for which sources will be provided when I'm less pissed) about one of the prime suspects for the anthrax attacks of late 2001 being a guy who'd chucked himself off a bridge... the inference being- no conspiracy. Just some guy who had access to this shit and had lost it somewhat.
