Aid/Charitable Work Abroad

Ok, so I'm thinking seriously about offering my services for foreign aid or charitable work and have a little bit of money behind me to cover air fares and the like.

The problem is that whilst I have a vague idea as to where to begin looking for those who might want offers of help, I have absolutely no experience - direct or indirect - of the field. Which is where you lovely people come in...

Have any of you done any sort of Aid/Charity work abroad before, and, if so, are there any groups which are better to work with?

Advice much appreciated.

I have heard some good things about the Peace Corps (enough to apply). One of the negative things about it is that they ask the national governments for info about what the town/city needs and the national gov't doesn't always get it right. So, if they send you there to teach math, you may find that they don't need a math teacher, so you have to figure out what they do need and learn how to do that. That's second-hand information.
