Morrison and Liefeld must unite!

You kids know damn well that I'm not talking about holy matrimony, neither!

Wouldn't a Morrison and Liefeld collaboration be, like, incredible?

Below is a mission statement for all the chaos magick buffs out there. If you, like me, think that Grant and Rob should collaborate on a brutal, Kirbyesque piece of Saturday morning cartoon-style trash, then feel free to sigilise it.

I wish to see Grant Morrison and Rob Liefeld collaborating on a comic book together.

Balls to that idea.

Liefeld's talentless. A Morrison collaboration would only lend him a false air of legitimacy.

Amen.

Hell no.

Both have an affection for post-Marvel Kirby and an innate sense of what made those stories work. I sincerely believe that they could produce something that would surprise all of us.

Is also in keeping with the Hegelian "thesis + antithesis = synthesis" idea that formed the framework for The Invisibles.

this is a joke right? liefeld? have you read his work? i remember reading early youngblood issues and they were utter trash. his artwork is horrible. in fact i don't remember that many early image titles being anything worth of a great read. wildcats, spawn, shadowhawk... they were all pretty bad. sometimes i get the feeling that liefeld's work reflects the psychosexual violent longings of a ten year old.

Just the other week I was thinking to myself that Morrison + Mike Mignola = Kirby, but with more black ink and better writing.

please let it be known before reading the rest of my post that i think Liefield is a total hack who can't draw for shit.

sometimes i get the feeling that liefeld's work reflects the psychosexual violent longings of a ten year old.

that's exactly the point, i think! it's the Aeon of Horus! the reckless, energetic, powerhouse with no sense of restraint, guilt, or morality, gleefully pressing forward!

this is so crazy it just might work!

I utterly loath Liefeld. Some of the worst comics I've ever had the misfortune of reading have been penned by the bastard.

But...

I can't help thinking that I'd like to see the results of a team-up. Fuck knows why.

dizfactor, you've hit the nail on the head for two important reasons:

1) Liefeld is indeed one of the best living manifestations of Horus.

2) A critic recently accused Morrison's work of reading as though it was written by (to paraphrase) a fourteen year old with ADD.

Morrison isn't stupid. If he wrote a script for Liefeld, he'd hardly write Mystery Play now, would he?

He'd write something that wouldn't require much character development concentrating instead on a lot of hyper-kinetic psycho-sci-fi head-phuq action. Like Assault on Weapon Plus, but with far bigger balls.

Come on kids, lets get with the Chaos Magick! We gotta make it happen!(Please excuse the tragic Britpop sloganeering. Thought it might evoke happy memories of The Invisibles.)

Liefeld draws the worst guns ever. Has he ever seen a gun? Perhaps someone could show him some photos of guns before he draws one again. That would help.

The thing is, most of us hate Liefeld's art. I mean, come on, it really is extraordinarily shit. So shit in fact that I simply do not have the words...

...although part of me does find it bizzarely compulsive. It has the same energy as a copy of Razzle: seedy, dirty and ugly.

The same has been said of The Filth.

And yet they exist at total odds with each other:

Morrison is a year ahead of his deadlines, Liefeld is always a year behind his deadlines.

Morrison works like a dog, Liefeld produces about three panels of "art" a year.

In the early nineties, Morrison was assosciated with the formation of Vertigo Comics, a critically well received imprint of a major comic company.

in the early nineties, Liefeld was assosciated with the formation of Image Comics, an independent company that was initially mauled by critics.

etc, et-bloody-c.

I applaud your philosophical reasoning for this, SexyLegend, but I disagree - DOOM FORCE is the closest I ever want to get to a Morrison/Liefled collaboration. Just skimming through Millar's YOUNGBLOOD #1 (which came out last week to absolutely no publicity at all) made me want to vomit. No matter how many diametrically opposite cool parallels you come up with between Morrison and Millar, I have no interest whatsoever in this collaboration. I don't find Liefled's art compelling in any way, shape or form. I wish you luck on your magickal endeavors on this front, but to quote the Beatles, "Don't you know that you can count me out."

When I was 12 I had a "Rob Liefeld Barbeque" in my backyard with one of my friends. We burned all of our Liefeld comics in a giant pit and danced around half-naked chanting "Death to Liefeld!" like the Wild Boys, while filming the whole thing.

Le Grr... Liefeld - spawn of evil - destroyed my beloved New Mutants and tried to take all comics down with him. He is only to be spat on, from a distance, for his heinous crimes against humanity and proportion.

but his dad died making him the breadwinner at like nineteen, and six months later he´d made himself millions to feed his lil brothers and sisters with. that's heroism. and maybe he knows people who actually do have thighs like that.

Or maybe a real one. Up real close.

Liefeld does indeed suck. But the sillier bit of my brain is going "YEAH! Fuck it! It'd be a laugh!"

I take it that support is fairly modest for this idea.

Fuck it, i'm gonna email Morrison next week when the last Filth comes out. i've already suggested it to Liefeld.

Chances are, Morrison won't be arsed:

A) to reply,

B) to actually do it, 'cos Millar and Moore have already done it.

But it's worth a try.

With his lousy drawings and utterly confusing dark panels, Liefeld ruined my habit of buying comics forever. I might never be able to thank him enough.

yeah. morrison should do a script which has no characters in it. just backgrounds.

I'd like to see Liefeld do that.
