Comics, Covers and Remixes

I was chatting the other night about correlations and differences between music and comics - a debate I don't really want to continue here - start a new thread if that interests you.

Anyhoo it got me thinking about comics cover versions - Outside of origin stories its pretty rare that a single comics script will ever get more than one artist. So if you had a free hand what comics would you like to see 'covered' by another artist, which artist do you want to see and why.

a special unoriginality prize goes to the first one to say the Invisibles...

In a perfect world, Jim Lee would redraw all of those comics that Seth, Chester Brown, and Joe Matt have done. They are good stories, but the art is so boring and lacking in character, you know what I mean? Just because a story is low-key and dialogue-heavy, it doesn't mean it can't be dynamic. And who does dynamic better than Jim Lee?

No one.

After At death's door I would like to see all of The Sandman redrawn by Jill Thompson in that manga style. Except for Mike Dringenberg's stuff, of course. And Marc Hempel's.

I'd love to see Frank Quitely redraw the entire Invisible Kingdom storyline, I still have scars from the inconsistency of those pages.

Oh crap, I missed the last sentence of the first post. Bring on the prize.

Cameron Stewart redrawing Frank Miller's Dark Knight. Or 300.

You know you want to see it too.

I mean... you just do.

And I'd love to see the guy who does Diesel Sweeties redo Arkham Asylum. Or Tim Truman's Scout.

Seth Fisher redrawing Morrison's Doom Patrol.

I haven't actually read Lee & Kirby's Fantastic Four yet, but I'm curious how an underground cartoonist like Jim Woodring or Al Columbia would "remix" those old stories. Preferably with extra scenes added in by the artists.

Kinda giving me ideas for starting my own comic...

Sienkiewicz remixing Watchmen or From Hell...

interesting that few marvel comics have been suggested for covers...

interesting that someone thinks sienkiewicz could add something to watchmen that gibbons missed.

and al columbia doing fantastic four? preferred to kirby? the fuck why?

good to see that comics remixes would follow similar laws to music remixes -

no-one likes them as much as the other version

Woodrow Phoenix or Rian Hughes need to do versions of Yummy Fur. Boy, would that rock!

Marvel did a couple of remixes in 1999.

They retold the first meeting between the Fantatstic Four and the Inhumans in the series Fantastic Four: Fireworks

Also there was Silver Surfer: Loftier Than Mortals. This two-part story retells the classic Fantastic Four issues where Dr. Doom steals the Power Cosmic from FF #57-60. Written by Michael Jan Friedman and pencilled by Sal Valluto.

I think that bloke also wrote Transformers: The Movie.

I don't know if there's awful much point in this. Doubt many artists would find it all that rewarding to be Gus van Sant doing Psycho. Maybe I'm wrong.

Obviously I'd love to see Frankie Q do all of New X-Men, but 's not going to happen.

I would love to see Rob Liefeld redo the artwork on the entire Invisibles series. And if we were really lucky, he could also re-write it.

Conversely, I'd like to see Dan Clowes (or maybe Tomine) giving those old Image titles (Brigade, Cyberforce, etc.) a shot in the arm.

"...and al columbia doing fantastic four? preferred to kirby? the fuck why?"

Not really a preference over Kirby's version (again, never read that run). Just interested in how someone like Columbia would re-interpret it.

Or any silver-age material, actually. It'd be more than just a reworking - more like taking a plots/characters out of context and placed in Columbia's warped little world. Less a remix than a mash-up?

AHAHAHAHAHAH HOLY CRAP! LIEFELD! INVISIBLES! AHAHAHAH *ahem*, sorry. yeah, and i'd like to see morrison write youngblood and quitely draw it. it would be interesting to see king mob with tiny feet. and everyone in spandex, renamed so that they all have the word "blood" in their names.

As I am just now in the midst of reading the entirety of Claremont's X-Men run for the first time ever, I have to admit that I'd like to see someone w/a slightly better ear for dialogue and less of a penchant for hyperbolic overwriting take a stab at the first several years of Claremont's run. The Byrne stretch was pretty solid, and the writing seems to have been flowing fairly smoothly during the Paul Smith era (where I am at the moment), but most of the rest is a bit shaky. The plots are pretty solid, but the dialogue and captioning could use some serious retouching.

Or are we just talking about remixed artwork here?

hasn't morrison effectively done young blood in doom force?

Nah, it was more like X-Force.

Just said "hi" to Rob Liefeld on a message board, who was checking out NXM spoilers. He said "hi" back and expressed his love of said book. I then told him that he and Morrison had to get something together.

I mean, Morrison and Millar share artists like the Stooges used to share needles. Why shouldn't Morrison and Liefeld hook up for some hardcore?

Is it time for sigil magick, kids? I think so!

In fact, I think this calls for a new thread!
