Let's open up a new school and teach kids our way. Like homeschooling, only with more kids and not at home. Classes in music, social obseravtion, meme analyzation, and magik are offered. Sign up today, parents. Sign up today, if you're sick of your child getting an Americanized Education of hidden ciriculum and required "work and social skills" classes. I'm sure we could get accredited if we knew the right people. Right? Right?

Actually, a lot of homeschooling is done in just this way - sort of one neighborhood mother (and yeah, it's usually a mother) takes over as teacher for a few kids. Usually, I get the impression these homeschool groups are organized along conservative, church lines but accredited through regular homeschool programs (no links at hand right now)

My girlfriend homeschooled her son for a couple of years.

It's very cool but a lot of work. As long as you meet certain academic criteria (so that if the kid does reenter orthodox education s/he's not behind everyone else) you can also throw all sorts of cool shit in there.

For example, Yoga as physical ed.

There was also an article in the SF Chronicle 5-6 months ago on a school and curriculum created by students. Kind of a real world example of Morrison's 'school run by students' thing.

I'm not sure there is a web version but I do have a digital transcript of the article. If anyone wants a copy, let me know and I'll send it via email.

Whats the name of that school in the UK where the Pupils decide all the rules?

Usually about three months in someone votes to remove all the rule and chaos ensues until they get board of it and vote then back in. The older kids go along with this as they did it when they were new :-). Teaches them valuable lessons in personal responsibility and the like.

The Daily Mail hates it with a passion :-)

Is this anything like those ol' schools established by Rudolph Steiner(?)?

I always thought they sounded really neat - based on some kind of system whereby kids could individually choose what they wanted to study.

And it's got to be pretty cool to go to a school established by the author of 'Occult Science', even if said book did seem a load of bunkum, imho..

Summerhill is the name of the school, and as far as I know it has nothing or very little to do with the teachings of Steiner (antroposophism) which is a shake-together-lots-of-mystic-sounding-crap-philosophy. As far as I know.

They go in for biodynamic farming, which has nothing to do with my fictionsuit.

They hava sommething called Steiner-schools where I live, they're fairly popular and seem to offer quite wishy-washy teaching, with lots of colour-theory-mysticism and dislike of mathematics.

Summerhill seems cooler. There are also totally anarchist-run schools in, for instance, Spain. The nearest anarchist kinder-garten to me is in Stockholm, and we really should get one started here in Finland too...
