A while back there was a thread in the magick section where we discussed the idea of a "wiki of shadows". A website which would act as a shared resource on things like tarot, kabalah, architypes etc. And be created and improved by the community of people using it.

It now exists! The URL is http://sourceryforge.org/

I've spent the last few days setting something up and creating some initial content for it. I would love it if any people who read barbelith could start fleshing out any parts they care about.

I think that this project has the potential to become something really interesting and useful, but only if it catches enough peoples imagination.

I've called the site "sourceryforge.org" as a bit of a pun on "sourceforge" which is a site which provides resources to people developing free software projects. I'm hoping that sourcery forge can become something similar, a free resource for a community.

Wiki's only really work, in my experience, when there is a big enough of a community using it to make it feel "alive". So I'm also looking for suggestions or help of how to advertise it to the people on the internet who might find it interesting without annoying anybody or spamming etc.

The site is running the software that was created by the wikipedia site. It seems to have the best features for this project.

I've spent the last few days adding some "seed" pages for things like the 78 usual tarot cards, the 10 spheres of the tree of life etc. These pages have some basic "factsheet" information and statistics, but no real flavour yet. I'm hoping that over time people add and more correspondences, descriptions, ideas and opinions to each page, and also create new sections.

It's not intended as a place to write things intended *as* workings (ie. no hypersigils please, we have places for that kind of thing already. It's also not intended as a discussion forum (except for how to run the site).

So, go, have a look! You can edit any page without a username or anything. Just click "edit this page". Scary eh?

ps. If anybody can provide a nice logo, and/or some artwork for the frontpage, that'd rock.

I had some ideas for a ToC... I'll put that up later tonight, primarily in the hope that it will provide a seed for someone to go, "Nah, that's all wrong" and change it.

Now, Elseware, maybe I'm just new at this and clueless, but is this supposed to be sort of an online magickal library that people can use and add to? It's not a discussion forum, I get that(and not like we'd need another one) but I'm a little confused how this all works. Help.

ToC: There's a rough one at Cultures and Traditions Index. Feel free to add or change it though. It's just there as it's easier to start with something than create from nothing.

is this supposed to be sort of an online magickal library that people can use and add to? - yeah, that's about the size of it. With the ability to both create new resources, create links between resources and kinda "write in the margins" when you think something should be clarified, or annoted.

For example, there's a page for the Queen of Wands. Currently it's pretty empty. Some headings with no content and links to pages about Queens, Wands, Tarot and Royalty cards. Amongst other things you could...

* add a description of the card in the rider waite (or other) decks.
* add a long or short comment on the divinitory meanings of the card
* add a link to the King of Wands card, pointing out that they both have lion images on their throne.
* add links to pages outside the tarot section about cats and/or lions.
* point out (what you think are) flaws in the imagery
* giving a alternate idea to one of the ones above. Each page has an associated "chat" page for discussing any conflicts. Ultimately 2 conficting ideas are useful, so long as they are presented as such.

I find it really helpful to hear multiple slightly conflicting explanations of things like tarot cards. It helps me find my *own* ideas about the card.

Also, I find explaining and describing things helps get my thoughts in order. We all discuss this stuff, but it's in trying to explaining it clearly that we often learn new things.

I figure that if I'd find it helpful, then other people probably will to.

I'll be mostly pottering around the Tarot section until I learn some more about the sephiroth, all you people who have things to teach, see you there!
It might be worth touring a few magicky sites and telling people it exists, the difficulty is getting quality contributors IMO. Anyone know any good sites?

I've got some short and sweet summaries for the divinitory/psychological/linguistic systems meaning of each of the Tarot cards. I actually made a didactic tarot set for learning... How do you want me to get them to you?

Either enter them yourself, or chuck em to me via whatever form you've got them in. (elseware@totl.net)

*bump* because it's been ages and it's a great idea.

There's something similar (but limited to tarot only) at tarotpedia. Also young, also (apparently) having a hard time getting off the ground. Might be worth either joining forces, or at least finding some way to share content between the two places.

[note: I know nothing about the people behind this, I just ran into it while trying to make some sense of tarot]
