Why do houseflies love my CD player?

On the kitchen table I have a large-ish CD, tape, radio thingy. It is matt black. I don't turn it off at the mains, just leave it on standby. For the past 2 days a minimum of 2, max 4, houseflies have been continually crawling on it and flying round it. One even got trapped in the tapedeck today...

As far as I know it's never been covered in food, beer spills, rotting meat juices etc. What is the flies' attraction to it? Could it be something to do with electro-magnetic fields or something? Any ideas?

Something small crawled inside it and died.

Ants are attracted to electrical currents. I see no reason why flies would not be as well. But consider also the possibility that your CD player may be possessed by an avatar of Beelzebub. Signs of this include buzzing static even while playing CDs, severe nightmares if you sleep with the thing turned on, and sibilant voices spouting either gibberish or urges to do violent and corrupted acts emanating from the speakers.

To narrow down the possibilities, try unplugging it. If the flies still crawl around on it, you've got Beelzebub.

Or try altering the music/radio station(s) you play on it. Seriously.

If it's been in the kitchen a while, it may be covered with a thin film of cooking oil, then of course you have fingerprints, other tiny food particles etc. I imagine a fly would quite like that. Being matt black, this crap will hardly be visible to you. Make a cloth damp, not wet, with hot, slightly soapy water and give it a wipe down.

You, course, are probably not matt black, I meant the CD player.
