Not much money, but these kooks from wollongong (in aust.) are soliciting for stories about giant monsters for an upcoming anthology working title of "daikaiju".

We're not talking mere dinosaurs or eagle-sized mosquitoes here; these monsters must be unreasonably huge -- larger than the laws of physics can comfortable accommodate. (You may, of course, be creative in your explanation as to how such creatures are possible within the context of your story. Or you need not explain at all.)

The term 'daikaiju' is Japanese in origin, and refers to a tradition of film story that began with the 1954 version of Gojira, better known in the West as 'Godzilla'.

and

What is intended for this anthology is that contributors will create original giant monsters and original story lines featuring them, and develop their own viable and intriguing mythology in the process. These stories may be SF, fantasy or horror in approach, set in the present, the future or the past (alternative history), serious, humorous, satirical, romantic or adventurous in tone, feature one or many monsters, be written from any point-of-view, and be as 'complete' or 'episodic' as the author sees fit, provided that they offer a unified, satisfactory experience to the reader. Contributors should consider where the profound and seemingly limitless appeal of the most successful giant monster films and stories lies; let your imagination enter that playground and experiment with its tropes.

and, most importantly,

While we do not plan to include illustrations or pictures throughout, we will consider including one comic-strip (manga-style) tale, should we be offered one that we like. Such a comic-strip tale should be in black-and-white, with frame sizes clearly viewable on an A5 page. Please contact us by email before submitting.

Interesting idea and quite a challenge. Are there even any examples of this working (giant monsters being a focal point) in prose? Does it only work on the big screen?

Though i've not read it, Gojiro by Marc Jacobson.

There's also a Joe R Lansdale short story; "Godzilla's Twelve Step Program." Hilarious. Reptilicus is his sponsor in a program to cure him of his addiction to destroying cities.

I may attempt to cook something up for submission.

I wrote an extremely short story a while ago called "Godzilla Flick"..

..I'll have to see if I can successfully remove the word 'Godzilla' and give it a shot..

Are there even any examples of this working (giant monsters being a focal point) in prose?

Well I've got a book on my shelf by Ken Hollings called "Destroy All Monsters". I haven't got round to reading it yet, back the blurb on the back goes as follows;

Using the expansive pop poetry of Japanese monster movies, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS offers a darkly ironic retelling of recent events, as America slides into war in the Middle East.

Muri, a Japanese Android, is befriended by Yena and Mai, two American girls on the loose in Tokyo's red light district. In a world of experimental drug dealers and professional sex workers the girls find themselves on the run from sinister forces as giant reptiles descend on Japan..

It can't *possibly* be as good as it sounds..

I have about five scripts written for comics set in this genre, which I was going to post online under the title Kaiju. At least one of them is something I'd like to revisit. Maybe I will, now.

Yeah, this totally sounds interesting. I do think a comic would be easier to pull off cause it's such a visual genre but I think I'll try the short story.

Oh, YERRRS! God, that makes me so happy! I'm gonna try and get a story in it, but even if I don't, the knowledge that there will be a book of giant monster stories out one day warms my heart.

Melbourne-based Natasha Cho has been doing godzilla comedies for a while now, as well as other odd pop cultural references including morphing, tony danza and ninjas.

i've been playing about with putting the kind of stuff you usually see in visual media like movies, tv and comics in to prose for a while now. got this not-really-very-well-designed collaborative piece up at the moment if anyone's curious.

I had a copy of GOJIRO, but got rid of it sharpish. not much chop. There's a book called SHIVA 3000 that's much better at that kind of stuff. giant hindu robots. lovely.

Most of the story ideas I come up with start turning into "Iron Giant."

Hmm.

Yeah, I keep thinking of that bit in The Iron Man where that dragon the size of Australia turns up and sits on Australia.. you know, aside from the start where he puts himself back together, that's the only bit of the book I remember..

How big do you think a giant monster could get before it would start messing with the Earth's alignment, rotation, and/or orbit?
