Weird thoughts about rebuilding lost threads...

I had a really weird idea earlier today when I stumbled upon this: Early saved pages from the Nexus that maybe we could save those threads and reintegrate them into the main site somehow. Trying to work out how it would be done at the moment... Anyone interested in us doing that?

Also does anyone know of any other saved pre-this version bits of the site that exist anywhere?

Nice one Tom. I'd love to read the old threads from the Magick Forum, but perhaps everyone is not quite as madly anal as I am.

I would think that you could get a script to strip everything outside of the main table, then go through using the tr tags to delimit individual posts into discrete records fed into a db, then going through those using other common html tags to delimit the data elements.

A quick and dirty way would be open the page in (spit) MS-Excel, save as tab-delimited text, open in (spit) Word, find and replace CRs and delete other junk you don't want, save again as text and voila, ready for import. I guess. But I'm sure it's all in more sophisticated hands :-)

I'd be interested in reading them.

Layout-wise, I'd put em in their own category, I think. Like "Relics" or "The Vaults" or something. Because not all the current categories map onto the prior divisions.

Oh my gosh!! Neato! I think it'd be swell to reintigrate these. There are days when I mix the Nexus and all its niftiness.

I'll check my zip disks, if I can get to a drive. I think I preserved a crap load of stuff from before one of the board reboots.

Id like to read some "Is the Nexus dying?" threads.

i've been suggesting for years that we have archives around here... there was so much good information and energy back in the day. definately bring these things back somehow. i always thought it would be cool to take great threads and turn them into digests, long on information, short on chit chat, and save them in subject-organized vaults.

i mean really, the amount of sheer improvised genius that shines through here when the noise gets stripped away would be staggering in a readable archivable form.

The link's not working for me.

I'd definitely like to read some of the old threads; there's enough interesting characters around here that I wouldn't mind seeing their younger selves, in a sense.

And the analysis an' ting, too.

Don't forget that the Wayback Machine's also got some old (though not *as* old) Underground pages saved here. Searching for the Nexus only brings up the old snafu message.

Very few of the threads are available to read, but some of them still work - Spunky Monkey, for example. Don't know if I could be bothered trying them all to find out which ones are available, though.

Oh, Spunky Monkey was gooood. We ought to revive it.
