The Chinese Lunar Calendar. Ghost Month is the seventh lunar month when the gates of Hell are opened and all the ghosts are free to wander the world.
The Ghost Festival, also called the Hungry Ghost Festival (Da Jui), is the 15th day of said month. Feasts are offered to the dead, burnt sacrifices of hell money and other gifts are made to the ghosts (for them to take back to the afterlife). Paper lanterns are lit and set adrift in the water to guide nasty ghosts away from peoples' homes. Entertainers performing street operas and puppet shows aren't uncommon in large areas.
It's kind of the Chinese version of Halloween, if you want to simplify. |
