Are you a fan? What of? How do you feel about your fannishness? Is it an embarrassing social disease, a 'goddamned hobby' or a way of life? What makes a fan?

I will answer my own questions later, when I am not supposed to be doing something else.

Buffy, Faithless, Diana Wynne Jones. I am proud to be a fan, if I loved comics more I could be a proper fanboy, as it is I am a wannabe and proud of that too.
There should be an annual march for being proud of your fandom.

Ooh ooh ooh Draco Malfoy. And Buffy and Diana Wynne Jones and William Wallace translator of the 1873 edition of Hegel's Logic and Malory Towers and Tipp-Ex mice and Ann Widdecombe (but only in a kitsch way) and Banana Yoshimoto and Eric Rohmer and Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane (both the character and fanfiction author). I love being a fan, it's a fun social disease especially when you meet others afflicted in a similar way.

The A-Team, of course. Seeing as I own an A-Team t-shirt, mug and video collection, had a "Murdock" t-shirt made and have taken fan-fiction to new heights by co-authoring a two-hour musical on the subject of the soldiers of fortune in question, I don't think I can justifiably claim to be ashamed of my obsession ...

I have a Paul Pope drawing and a Jhonen Vasquez drawing tattooed on my flesh.

I guess that makes me a fan.

I don't feel like a fan, though, because I ultimately feel I'm better and more interesting than anyone whose stuff I'm a fan of...

I'm using them...

ooh, I'm far too fickle. often I am a big fan of a band, collecting everything until I have it all and/or am tired of them...at which time, I move onto another band. same thing with authors, in the rare case that I find an author I really adore, I'll read all of that author's books until I find a stinker (and I always do), and then I am just sad and readless.

but there are very very few things that I get into obsessively....maybe that's what I'm missing, something I love so much that I'd tattoo it on my butt.

The little dog eating an ice-cream from Squee (y'know, the one that gets run over about 50 times...)

It's a terrible tat - too small and blurry...

I can't help it... I'm a Star Wars fan. And yes, that means I'm even looking forward to Episode Three... you know, just on the off-chance (I refuse to believe that Lucas could have betrayed us so heinously).

And I'm a music fan- often starstruck. Meeting David Tibet in a building society was a defining moment of my life... now he actually comes up and talks to me if I bump into him and, sadly enough, it makes me feel special. Same with Julian Cope.

YES, I'm a fucking fanboy. And it's terrible.

(Although I did once turn down an invitation to go drinking with a friend who was mates with Nick Cave, on the grounds that I didn't want to get pissed with Cave because at least one of us was bound to think the other one was a wanker, which would have ruined my enjoyment of the records).
