Bill: I'm afraid it is all true. I have knitted, and will KNIT AGAIN. Bwahahahahaaaaa.

Actually it's worse than that. Not only must I confess to knitting, but to almost every other textile/handicraft perversion known to man. I have embriodered, crocheted, macramed, woven, spun and dyed, and done that crap sort of knitting where you use a dolly-bobbin and all you can knit is a long wool snake.

Nobody knows why anyone would do this.

ariadne, that's genius...

Roll up, get yer subversive subcultural socks here...

Bill, can we put you down for a couple of camo pairs?

Oh and anyone ever do finger-knitting? WTF? or was that just my mum taking the piss?

one of my clearest memories of my mum is watching her knit at top speed(ie being able to see the cardi/jumper appear) while watching telly/chatting. And she only had the use of one arm. how cool?

in fact, Bill, if you could hold out your hands, 'bout ten inches apart, I've got some wool that needs winding....

haven't done much sewing/embroidery (i cheat for clothes and use bondaweb) except for that crap primary school type where you're given a sheet with holes in and sew things like this

x x x \/\/\/\ -_-_-_-_- x x x

with heavy yarn... yawn.

Mordant, you really are a fucking freak aren't you? And not in a nice way.

in fact, Bill, if you could hold out your hands, 'bout ten inches apart, I've got some wool that needs winding....

Sorry BIP, I never touch the stuff. (Seeing an entire ball go through one of this guy's tits on thursday night is the closest i ever got to wool.)

maybe be able to do one, very bad, stitch!

Anna, please, listen to me, there's no such thing as 'just the one'. That's what everyone says when they start, but it'll turn into two, it'll become rhythmic, then habitual, and before you know it, you'll need a knit first thing in the morning, you'll be sneaking knits at lunchtime and you'll never be able to get to sleep at night without a knit. Just Say 'No'. Please.

Christ, I've a good mind to start stamp-collecting to spite you all...

Yes, that's true... knitting is very addictive. If you are apart from your needles and yarn, you may catch yourself air-knitting from time to time.

Socks and dishcloths is my line.

yeah, you filthy bastards just discarding your needles after you've had a knit, it's not safe or hygienic for the rest of us. Maybe you guys should start a needle exchange?

Oh, stamp collecting, now you're talking... and coins. And, er, school stories... I had a friend who used to collect colourful rubbers (erasers before anyone gets clever) and was very jealous of her. When I was six.

Anyone care to join me for some country dancing later?

'She'll be coming round the mountain...'

I used to love country dancing when I was at primary school. I used to dance with a boy called Michael who asked me every time. I was the only girl who got asked because I skipped faster than everyone else.

I used to do country dancing at primary school, too. It made me the man I am today (at least, that's my excuse!).

Country Dancing, blimey it's been a while since I've heard that mentioned .

Used to do it at primary school and thought it was a lot more fun than normal PE, none of that jumping over things malarky, flinging your partner around was lots of fun.

Hmmm this was also the school where I was quite a dab hand at that kids sewing (with the cloth with lots of small holes in).

*ah the fun we had*

Bill, knitting can be butch, with a massive steel knitting machine. My missus did textiles at Uni, and I was allowed to help her out by slaving away over a hot knitting machine, making massive long tubes out of clear nylon. Damn hard, sweaty work, pushing that rur-der-der-der thing back and forth all day, I can tell you. If you did it all day every day you could probably grow enormous arm muscles which you could use later for lifting up big guns, or changing gears in a motor car.

well thanks for the image Savers old chap, but it's not so much lack of butchness which worries me, so much as the fact that until yesterday, I had thought of all these knitters as being subversive, countercultural, and, well, grrls rather than girls, wimmin rather than members of the Women's Institute, or indeed ogs (og being an Old Girl wch is what Grandma Posters was always called, as opposed to om, Old Man, wch was what Grandpa Bill Posters was called).

Y'know how in Point Break one of Bodhi's mob says, "Lawyers don't surf" in that completely definitive way a true member of a subculture can define the boundaries of that subculture? Well, to paraphrase, Barbeloids don't knit. We have a specific way of behaving round here, and that ain't it. (IMHO, of course.)

Is that the same kind of idea as Real Men Don't Eat Quiche? I eat quiche... evidently I am neither a true Barbeloid nor a Real Man. In fatc, I think I might be an Old Girl, chaps. How can I live with myself?

My Mum does knitting and sewing with classes at a nearby school to where she lives, it's the only way she can get the money to pay for the crack.

Maybe Tom should set up a sewing forum on here and our Barbe-parents could be moderators? < thinks of Mum trying to run a forum > Heh, that's going to keep me amused for a long time...

Bill, I think you'll find that there's a considerable grrrl handicrafts subculture, as epitomised by the lovely Kelley Deal.

crocheted and felted a tan yarn, added pearls I painted with nail polish, a burnt orange wool lining, also felted, and crocheted the straps from a hand spun silk from Steve Albini's sister-in-law on her ranch in Montana

Do real grrrls eat quiche?

and I am also undoubtedly, neither a Real Man or a Real Barbeloid...

ah well.

oh shut up and bake me some scones.

Maybe after the next big anti-WTO demonstration/riot, those ladies who formed the knitting bloc could meet up with us gentlemen from the stamp-collecting bloc and we could, y'know, go for a soft drink and a nice slice of pie, maybe? If it's not to forward of me to make such a suggestion, of course.

Er, seriously, if it goes on in the realms of the grrls, then fair enough, and i thank you for drawing that to my attention BIPster. Maybe you should write something about it? I'd have thought there's a paper in there s'where...

Oh how absolutely marvellous. I do like group activities and those stamp collecting gentlemen will be so pleasant as to pull the seat out for you and always open the door to let a lady through.

I fucking love knitting. My grandma was ace, she used to knit these really psychadelically-patterned cardigans for me and my sister, like she was on acid when she knitted them. And she used to drink Snowballs as well. She so rocked. Grandmas and knitting just go together so well...

Photos of latest work, please?

Also, an idea for a simple project? I've only ever been able to knit a straight strip, and that not too evenly. What's something easy to make?

Ariadne

You could knit lots of coloured squares and sew them together to make a blanket? That's fairly standard first-project stuff.
But making shapes isn't too hard either - have a look out for kids knitting patterns and knit yourself a teddy bear or something.
