The only five year-old I know absolutely loves Mario Kart (in multiplayer - I don't know how well it'd go down if he was playing it on his own) and is completely addicted to the last Harry Potter title, whatever that was. I guess you're looking for simple but not patronising here. Part of me wants to say Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Advance 2 and Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, but they may be a little old for him. Mind you, previously mentioned five year-old can hold his own in games of Unreal Tounrament, so I could be completely wrong.
I can see Bubble Bobble: Old & New going down a treat - whole generations have been brought up loving the adventures of two little dinosaurs who trap their enemies in bubbles. Bust a Move's also a really good suggestion if you want a simple but extremely competent puzzle game. If he likes Crash, then he'll probably enjoy the first Sonic Advance - it's tight, colourful and fun. I've heard good things about Go Go Beckham (another platform game, rather than a football one), but while it looks good I haven't played it myself. Yet.
One word of advice: other than the Potter title, steer away from anything that's got the filthy fingerprints of movie/TV licensing on it. Publishers have been remarkably quick to latch onto the fact that a huge amount of GameBoy sales are made to parents/relatives who don't know what they're buying and plump for the games with recognisable titles, and are flooding the shops with hasty, sub-sub-standard cash-ins. |
