I recently read Randy Barnett's book The Structure of Liberty, in which he describes a form of governance without a centralized government. Basically, he suggests a stable anarchy, although he doesn't use the term. He addresses a number of domestic concerns about how this would work, but doesn't say anything about how people living in anarchy might defend themselves from foreign invaders. Does anyone know of any books or articles addressing this?

A key subject for anarchists, what to do when a peace-loving, autonomous hippy commune is 'taxed' for valuables, under threat of violence, by armed mafia.

Would non-violent direct action work in such a case? It worked in India against British armed force, so perhaps it could work on a smaller scale?

Switzerland's system is one way of having a limited government but everyone has to be in the military. I think the best solution is strict American Constitutional limited government in which the government doesn't do anything but have police and a military, which would'nt satisfy an anarchist but would satisfy me. The Libertarian Party has the best ideas on the ultimate possible freedom that would work in the real world, I'd reccomend looking at their website.
