I've absolutely no idea. But just wanted to reply anyway, to say well done.

You should maybe invest in membership of the Society of Authors or the Writer's Guild. They'll be able to give you advice on contracts and suchlike, but you need to be a member before they'll deal with you. Check their websites for subscription costs.

Congrats on the book. What's it called?

Check the list of members on this site for the agent you have been recommended. Then by all means contact them, but you may as well contact a few others as well. Get hold of the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook and find some you like the sound of. There's nothing wrong with contacting more than one agent at once, and you should be so lucky as to have them fight over you.

Once you have an agent, they can advise you on things like advances and so on, which no one can possibly tell you without more information - those bits of a deal depend on expected sales and markets and so on. Don't sign anything without representation (and be wary of anyone who wants you to).

Weird. I posted two responses to this thread. The first two responses. And I saw them posted and everything. Now they're gone. Did I offend?

Anyway, I posted this link to the Yahoo! group WorkForWriters. 3283 writers to offer advice to a question you post regarding writing. (Don't worry. Not all 3238 respond.)

Oooh! That's fantastic! What is it, fiction, memoir, travelogue? And when's it out?

Yes, well done Chimp. Hope it all goes well and that you get your agent and advances etc. sorted out. I think you probably deserve another day on the piss.

Can I ask a boring tax-related question? If you are a writer of, say, fiction/memoir/travelogues can you set off against tax the money you spent travelling?

Well done that chimp. Not knowing what kind of publishing company it is or what the terms of the contract are, I'd say seven grand is a reasonable advance. Unless they want you to pay back the shortfall if it doesn't make that much money, of course.

As to agents, I'd shop around. With a contract under your belt you can be more selective and should probably get taken more seriously by agents. Check out this site for a full and pretty much up-to-date list of UK agents.

I feel I should point out to everyone that the user name "The Chimp" is in fact another tedious Knowledge suit, which has now been shut down. Apologies to anyone who was enjoying the conversation...

At least if it was all a fantasy I no longer have to feel madly, biliously jealous. What a relief.

Me too. I ground my teeth to splinters having to write nice things about some other bastard getting published. I can relax now.

Let this be a warning to any other smart-arse who tries to brag about getting a contract.

Whisky, you so just read my mind. Now I can go back to feeling great about myself whilst my book writes itself at an agonising slow pace.
