Bio K9, Haus and Jack Fear...

Tom Coates

A user who has previously been known on the board as The Knowledge has recently been passing himself off as (at least) three other users - Bio K9, Haus and Jack Fear - by changing his display name to be similar to theirs. As usual, the IP addresses of all the posts has been collected and added to the list. The login names of the various users have been appended with a random number of letters and numbers along with the password and their user name changed in order to stop them having access. Masquerading as another user on this board will not be tolerated. The display names of the offending suits has been changed to reflect that they are fake.

Shit. Cheers for the heads-up, Tom.

(also bumping this so it gets seen... seems like it should)

Andrew, you are aware that many of the people using this board work in film and media? So you might as well just take out an ad in Screen saying "Andrew's a pain in the ass, don't work with him"?

As it happens, he was also 'RobotManReformed'...

I'm assuming you don't mean always? Or do you?

No, just recently.

... possibly a very naive question but why does this guy do this ?

I think his personal motto is, "fake it until you make it." Or is it, "fake it until you are so old that nobody knows you never did make it"? I don't know. Who can say? It's not worth worrying about.

Ah, there's a question and a half. If it was a little less abusive I'd suggest that he simply gets a kick out of it. As it stands I doubt anyone here could accurately answer your question. Perhaps Ganesh could have a stab at it but I suspect that might be a little too antagonistic. So really your guess is as good as anyone else's.

He was dropped on his head as a baby. He was dropped on someone else's head as a baby. Who cares? There's plenty of speculation about that in other threads - let's not have more of it here. In fact, since this one has served its purpose... Can we not post to it except to bump it occasionally? Or can we lock it at midnight tonight or something?

I think that's getting far too over-happy fascist with the thread locking.

Indeed. It's only a short step from locking an announcement thread so it doesn't turn into another discussion of Andrew's rather drab neuroses to burning books and invading Poland.

Can we then voluntarily, collectively, and responsibly, bearing in mind the concept of the 'Tragedy of the Commons' and the notion of the Prisoner's Dilemma, and knowing that we are members of a collective whose existence is iterative and hence dependent on our individual and group actions, decide that we will use the existing threads about Andrew to discuss him more if we must - and I recognise that I did not take this suggestion into account when I made my initial post to this thread - and try to keep this thread limited to the announcement which precipitated it?

Where are these faux posts? I am intrigued to see what this gimp's posting style is- know your enemy and all that. It's a terrible thing that I only know him by reputation, I'm sure he'd love to know we talk about him more than he talks himself.
Of course I missed the escapades that led to his infamy so perhaps I should take advice from you hoary old barbelites. Maybe I shouldn't pay him any attention, and he'll go away like Freddy in a nightmare on elm street...

Who know, Hana_Bi, who knows? Some theories collected here, though, if you're interested...

I thought threads couldn't be locked any more? Or is it only Tom that can lock them?

And Sam, if you're going to slag the man I feel you should either stick to his former username or we should all be given his last name, (possibly address and place of work too?) and then a) we'll all know who he really is, and b) he has the option of suing. You're just teasing us with this "Andrew" business. Assuming that is his real name.

General and serious point, though: can we please stick to usernames instead of real-life ones if we are discussing posters on this board? What's the point of partially outing someone?

I believe Knodge fully 'outed' himself, for he once supplied the entire interwebnet with his full name, home telephone number and (thus) his town of origin. I think it's this, coupled with the fact that there seems to be a 'normal rules don't apply' attitude re this individual, that explains why some speak of him by his (supposed) IRL name.

I believe that he's relinquished his right, through misuse of the suit facility, to be referred to by the name he adopts. He's Knodge, the Knowledge blah blah but the very fact that he hijacked three names and attempted to be recognised as those people... well you can't call someone a different name everyday.

OK, I didn't realise that it was all over the other threads too. Apologies to Vega for assuming he was the only one. But it still feels wrong. Clearly he has done wrong and of course you can't tell people a different name every day, but neither is Knodge ever likely to post under his real name so it's worse than useless. I think "the artist formerly known as the Knowledge" is perfectly adequate for our purposes, no?

I have mixed feelings. He made his name known, so it's not exactly secret. His abusive behaviour is mostly pretty easy for anyone to spot, and he's certainly given up the right not to be talked about by refusing to leave the baord and continuing to send people private messages (pretending to be people he isn't, telling them of the upcoming legal threat aganist them that they know the other guy is planning) when pretty much everyone on the board wants him to go away. Combine that with some of his "It's all just a joke when I said we should feed lesbians to alsatians and cave in black people's skulls with tire-irons" stuff, and I don't really see why he should be able to get away with not having his behaviour broadcast to the world.

Having said that - there's a difference between what is right and what is practical. I had to inform people that this had happened because otherwise you'd be unaware of the breach and unable to be prepared if it were to happen again. I tend to agree that it might be in the best interests of avoiding a long-ongoing battle to just not mention his name any more. No point in getting him riled for no reason.

And having said THAT I have considered saying to him that I'd only take his name down if he didn't come back to the board - and that if he did, his name would be replaced across the site in every post made by him or anyone else, every single deleted post of his would be returned from the dead, collated and referenced by his name in a nice-Google-indexable resource (like my weblog), but I have to be honest - I don't even think that would necessarily persuade him to stay way. I think I could pretty much guarantee that it would get to the top of Google as well... Shame, really...

Wow. Thats lame. Apologies to everyone I (well, not me but you know) may have offended. I'd also like to attribute everything else I've said to piss people off to The Knudge. I'm really a nice guy.

Hey! Does this mean Jack doesn't really hate me? Or if he does he hasn't said so? Yay!

Can I sue over this? Its all the rage, ya know.
