I just listened to the Greatest Hits album (2000, I imagine there's been a few) and it just wowed me. I couldn't find one duff track on there, and there are twenty in total. I mean all right, the UB40 collaborations still make me queasy, and I still think Chrissie Hynde should have known better, but still ... wow.
Night In My Veins is one of my favourites - so simple, so effortless, so sleazy. Aah, this is a proper rock'n'roll band.
Brass In Pocket is one of the few really cool songs that you can listen to with your parents, even though the lyrics are actually jolly suggestive, I don't mind saying!
Human - not a very promising title but it rawked my wahlld.
But the main point I wanted to make about The Pretenders is that there doesn't seem to be anyone who really loves or hates them. They maintain a kind of wallpaper status in rock music, yet I've never heard anyone accuse them of being boring or just doing the same old shit over and over again. Which, much as I like their songs, seems like fair criticism.
People, people, people, could we have discovered the ultimate contradictory rock band? |
