New Killing Joke album

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
03:58 / 31.07.03
I love this album. Musically it's the Joke at their finest... the original line-up back together. Opening track "The Death and Resurrection Show" is one of my current musical obsessions. It's got everything you want- the crunchy guitars, the pounding drums, those background electronics, those bits that sound a bit like NMA but not quite... the Godfleshy bits... the bits you just KNOW Al Jourgensen LOVES... Jaz Coleman's back to shouting his paranoid shamanic lunacy (and as usual, some of the lyrics are a bit silly, but who cares...?)

My only criticism is the couple of times when he puts on a "spooky" voice (the start of "Total Invasion") and I'm unpleasantly reminded of Valor-era Christian Death... not a good thing.

The live shows should be great, though, unless they're all in Zimmer frames.

Sold to the Stoat!
I'll have to get me a copy of this then.

I loved it...kind of wondered how Jaz would react to the Bush team, and he did so exactly as I thought he would.

The drum work by Dave Grohl was also very good. It's just about all I am listening to now.

Ahh. Me happy. Got my tickets for the Astoria show in October today.

And in the couple of weeks since first hearing it...? This is one of the BEST albums of the year. This and the new Jane's Addiction are most likely how I will remember 2003.

Still trying to get my head round it, but Lose Cannon is one fucking great song.

Abso-fucking-lutely. Have not got anything sensible to say about the rest yet, but I only got it today...

Actually, 'You'll Never Get To Me' is like 'Deb's Night Out' by Shihad crossed with Joy Division or something. Me like.

Like I said, nothing sensible to say.

Cunningly, on the Loose Cannon video, none of the band appear. On teh DVD single, however, you get a "behind the scenes" bit, which is mostly Jaz and Grohl bigging each other up. Jaz hasn't aged too badly... his eyebrows seem bushier, though.
GodDAMN but I love this album- even the silly bits have really grown on me, and the track I originally thought was too cheesy to live- "Asteroid"- is now one of my favourites.

How does this compare to their previous stuff then? Has it got the slightly cheesy synths they used on 'Extremities, Dirt...etc' ?

I'm that experienced with Killing Joke (I have Pandemonium and that's it) but I thought this was a cracking bit of chugga-chugga-wang shouty rock.

Sorry to bump this long-dead thread, but I'm going to see them in (ooh..) about three hours. And I WILL bore you with what they were like. Oh yes, I will. Either they're gonna rock a snow leopard's ass, or they're gonna be such a disappointment that Phantom Menace will seem a good movie.

Mark out the points
Build up the pyres
Assemble different drummers
Light up the fires
Put on your masks and animal skins
Illumination

Oh yes.

Ohmigod. They were fucking ace. Full report must happen tomorrow, cos I did a couple of pills and somehow can't type without a whole lot of effort.

Ah Stoatie, you just made my morning. I'm going to see them on tomorrow and they're rocking! And I have mushrooms!
YEA!

The Falcon

This thread reminded me of Pailhead, the fabled project between Jourgensen and Ian MacKaye of Fugazi.

No bad thing.

OK. They were fucking wicked. (Guess the couple of pills probably helped, but still...)

They played TONS of old stuff- "Wardance", "Requiem"... only louder than ever before. They surprised me by NOT starting with "The death And Resurrection Show", which always seemed like a perfect opener. They did play it, however, and lo, it was good.

They all seem to have cut their hair off to disguise their age, other than Jaz, who's let his keep growing to disguise his eyebrows.

Only downside was that there was no "You'll Never Get To Me", or "Love Like Blood".

All else, however, rocked like a motherfucker.

God, I envy you, uncle retrospective... I wish I was seeing them tonight, instead of sitting in front of my PC and listening to the album repeatedly. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

When did really old people start being allowed to rock this much? Jane's, KJ, Bauhaus... even Lou Reed actually stands up these days. Was God on holiday or something? Bring it on, is what I say... mayhap grey is the new black...

Well holy shit! That gig was fantastic, I've never seen such a bunch of old guys rock so god damn hard in my life.
I went along with a few mushrooms which looked like a mistake for a while (Jaz's face spent too long melting) but by the start of the death and Resurrection show I had to get in the pit.
Let me tell you moshing is not for the faint hearted while tripping.

The only problem I had was that there was a little much 80's stuff, I mean I was a bit disappointed when they didn't play Millennium but the fact they didn't play Loose Cannon left me feeling a little cheated.

But a dam god show!

ASTEROID!!!!!

Yes, I've recently purchased the album and can't stop listening. Jaz is a total chaos shaman railing on corporate amerikkka like sauoron on a bad day. The sound of the band now is absolutely huge, and grohl really brings the thunder home. I was never particularly into them in the past, always respected the band but didn't own any albums. I bought this one just to see what it would be like with grohl. Absolutely phenomenal, inspired, magick.

silent weapon for our quiet war

Also really digging Probot. Grohl keeps turning me on to great bands (I still reglalry play Queens).

So Amazon says there is a new KJ album called "What's This for" anyone know what's going on? I've heard nothing about it. Stoatie?
Anyone?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

What's This For was their second album (I can't remember what year from, but it was a long time ago)- I think Killing Joke (the FIRST one, rather than the last one), What's This For?, Revelations and Ha! have just been re-released (well, according to Terrorizer, anyway) along with Democracy and Pandemonium. (Which is good news, cos I LOVE Pandemonium and it's been fucking impossible to get hold of).

What's This For? is WELL worth getting- it's got Follow The Leaders on it, AND The Fall Of Because. It's among their best, definitely.

Cool, although I was getting all excited over a new album.
Anyone heard the remastered Pandemonium, is it worth getting if you already have it?

Bumped to say, has anyone heard the new one Hosannas From The Basement Of Hell yet?

It's phenomenal. It's kind of like Killing Joke (2003) was their affectionate "fuck you, we can do this shit" to those who they've influenced (Ministry, et al) and this one's more like their first couple of albums, but with the lessons they learned on the last one being put into practice. Not as wiry as the first two albums, maybe, but structurally very similar, only with the BIG CHUNKY GUITARS from the last one. Utterly fantastic. In the process of writing a review- will link to it when it's online.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Oh, and it's also cool cos it starts with Jaz shouting "LIFT UP YOUR SPIRITS!!!" and, this being the Joke, that could mean any of three different things.

I've only heard the first few tracks and it didn't grab me the way the last one did. It's just not as sharp sounding, you can really hear the lack of Dave.
Now it's early days yet, so I'll give it more time. There just doesn't seem to be a loose cannon on the album.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

On the first listen, I thought the same. After about the third, it became indispensible. The last track, Gratitude, is my favourite song in the world right now.

(I seem to remeber that KJ 2003 didn't really grab me on a first listen either).

Annnnnd thankyou Amazon. Mine arrived today, and call me a saddo, but I was lovin' it from the first listen. I'll admit it doesn't feel like ground's being broke, but it does all the right things the right way. Particularly liking Invocation - it's just so... epic?

Oh, and sorry about the double post, but as I was hitting the Post Reply button, it struck me how neat it is that the thread summary still holds so perfectly true, despite being about an earlier album. Delightfully, I would describe Hosannas as both 'form' and a bit silly!

fuck, Raven and Paul Fox of The Ruts within a week. Not good, really.
