RIP Bob Hope.

Death sucks.

Let's kill it.

And hoist a glass for Bob.

When I was a kid, I would wet myself laughing at him in the Road movies. I'll think about that today instead of what came along in the seventies.

Seems like he was able to crack wise till up to the end, more or less, which is remarkable.

Mind you, if anyone on the board had money on him to finally kick the bucket this year they'll be rolling in it.

(I feel this thread is addressed to me: "Hey, Alas, Bob hope is Dead, dja hear?") His right wingyness does make it a little harder to be utterly heartbroken, however, alas! (to make this even more self-referential)

Aw! Dammit I had imagined him still performing and womanising for the next 50 years!

I actually saw him in concert once...he was a great joke teller, even in his 80's. Yeah, his TV appearances were the height of laziness where he would be reading the cue cards for the first time as he came out on stage, but in his early days, he was a great comedian, had a funny personna and did some classic work in both movies and radio.

In a lot of ways, he is the last of the Golden Age Radio people to survive.

His politics? They never bothered me, since he seemed to be an "old school" right winger, like a Rockefeller Republican, not one fo the dogmatic Neo-Cons that run the party now. And he made fun of all Presidents, no matter what their affiliation.

So long Bob...you were always a class act.

Saw a talking head on MSNBC relating how when Bob made TV appearances he'd stroll into the studio next door unannounced... popped up on live broadcasts of the Tonight Show and a news broadcast, causing a commotion each time bc live TV is severely rattled by anything unexpected. Evidently he felt his celebrity, and in particular his affiliation with NBC, entitled him to go where he pleased. Amusing... I think I'd do the same, just for shits.

Bob Hope can't die .. he's one of those people scheduled to live forever etc. etc., just like the Queen Mo.. er, yeah, ok.

The 'Road to..' movies are the greatest anyway.

as part of the dream we inadvertantly killed bob hope with some kind of uber joint i found in the trunk.

kind of a bummer he died, cant say i am suprised though, he was pretty old.

Had a feeling the old man was gonna go... add him to my dead pool (a mention in Mr White's Barbelith epitaph). Doesn't make me feel any better though...

One cool thing. His daughter at his bedside asked where he wanted to be buried, his reply... "Surprise Me." He who laughs last...

RIP old man, you earned it.

And to maintain... next up... the pope.

You heard it here first.

Look I know it's sad and all, but I'm a bit miffed about this. Some codger dies at 100 and it makes all the national news programmes and newspapers. Bill Hicks died in his 30s and only the specialised press reported it. We adore mediocrity and scorn genius.

Net ban shee: My mate won £80 on Bob Hope in his dead pool - and it won't be the Pope next, it'll be Boris or Ronnie.

Never thought he was funny, yet always thought it was funny making fun of his not being funny. I actually was sad when I heard the news...

Well, I think a century's long enough for anyone, eh?

Oh please. Bill Hicks is widely adored, in fact he's one of most consistently acclaimed comedians of the 20th century. Not a day goes by without some supposedly counter-cultural pundit telling everyone that Bill Hicks was the Messiah, usually as if they were the first person to appreciate the man, and there can't be many celebrities who have their name dropped on Barbelith in hushed tones of reverence more often (Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, maybe Robert Anton Wilson, that's about it).

As for Hope mediocre - as has been said, lots of people here really liked films such as the 'Road to...' series. Myself included - they maym not be revolutionary and subversive (man), but they'r, you know, funny. Oh look, some people want to mourn an entertainer whose work you didn't care for or weren't aware of: must be a sign of how shallow society has become. Get a grip.
