I have no idea if anyone's up in those states at whatever hour it is over there, but I must try ...

Basically I am supposed to go on holiday with my family to a dude ranch in, I think, Wyoming (though the flights are into Phoenix, Az) and although it would be a dream holiday of a lifetime if it were just me and my sister, the prospect of holidaying with my parents at the age of 27 significantly reduces my will to live.

I have decided that the only way to retain sanity is to get in touch with local Barbeloids who would be willing to show me around a bit when over there (in theory, Aug 22-Sep 3) so that my entire appreciation of the local culture does not extend to the sound of my parents bitching at each other, the town karaoke bar and the Kwik-E-Mart on the corner. If there's no one in that area, fine, but if there is please please let me know - it will save my bacon if there was someone local to hang with.

Looks like you're on your own. Just be careful in those bars.

Elijah was in ABQ, which is in the same *region* as Phoenix... which is more than I can say for Wyoming.

I had a friend who worked as a cook for a summer at a dude ranch in Wyoming. It snowed there. In June. That's nuts.

I have friends involved in the Mesa, Az. slam poetry scene, so if you need to get out and see some performance poetry stuff, I can set something up. (Note: Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale and Phoenix are all basically the same city.)

How're you getting from Phoenix to Wyo.? It's a bit of a drive - 660 miles from Phoenix to Cheyenne as the crow flies.

OK, Phoenix is on the map. The wiggly line at the top left of Arizona is where the Grand Canyon is. You see Denver? That's (I'm pretty sure) the highest US city above sea level. And I think it's toward the opposite side of the Rockies from Phoenix.

Like, here's an elevation map of the same area:

It'll be scenic, but the terrain can be challenging.

(Of course, I would say that because I'm from the flat, flat swamps.)

Wyoming is not a densely populated state, and is not urban in the slightest. Cheyenne's population is around 53,000. And that's the big city.

Hmmmm.

Don't forget to take civilisation with you.

I'm thinking a couple of bottles of chocolate vodka, a laptop, and a selection of Anais Nin novels and posters of Dwight Schultz getting it on with Bard Pitt's body double from 'Fight Club'.

grant - thanks, that's very useful. Now I can visualise the pain. And that poetry slam thing sounds just the ticket to get me and the sis out and about of an evening.

And Mr. Vega, have you been looking in my sock drawer?

It's worth no civilization, though. I went out to the western states when I was in the fifth grade, holidaying with my parents and everything, and it was so beautiful. And there are lots of tourist shops where you can buy fool's gold! My parents would buy us all the fool's gold our little hearts yearned for. But you're a grownup. You've got cash.
