Haven't read "The Third Canon" - care to give us a digest?
My Dad brought a copy of “In Search of the Miraculous” home when I was about 14 or so, he’d been playing cards with someone and arguing about religion – this person had pressed the book on him to prove their was more to religion than slagging off Xtianity. It didn’t work though as I promptly nicked it and ran upstairs. Ploughed through it until I got confused with all the stuff about octaves. I recall reading about the idea of “self-remembering” - being conscious of who you are and what you’re doing. Ouspensky gives an account of attempting this and managing for about half an hour then completely losing it. I’ve tried – and still try – to do this as part of my own practice (picked up the idea later on from other sources), with varying degrees of success, but it’s a very profound idea, I think.
A mate had a copy of this down the pub a week or two ago actually, and I was flicking through thinking “I must get this” – it’s a fragmentary work, I think, but it’s got loads of great sections. |
