Recommend me some Asian/Indian influenced techno-ish music

I realise that I may be 10 years behind the trend but I recently heard some Talving Singh and really liked it. I can get his albums but wouldn't know the first place to start looking after that.

I was wondering if Barbeliods could throw me some bones in the form of act names, compilations to start off with and even good online retailers.

I like all kinds of electronic music so recommendations for jazz fusion, dn'b, doof, etc are all welcome.

Anything by Asa Chang And Junray gets my spine wobbling. Asa Chang is this Japanese guy who is a virtuoso tabla player who also writes for other instruments and combines it all with his computer.

I particularly like his stuff as he doesn't quantize everything to a midi clock. The rhythms are more like speech than something one could tap one's foot to (in true Indian classical style). The most truly dynamic, profoundly moving and exciting new musician I've heared for years. Big boner for this guy. I think he's released on Leaf Records. A quick google will turn something up I'm sure.

I've heard DJ Navdeep is pretty good. He's from NY, I think. He's a classically trained tabla player, who switches between that and turntables in his live sets.

I think what rake's really saying is he'd like to hear a sitar combined with some *fresh breaks*.

So it's time to run!

C'mon, get running!

We're neck and neck.

Now I'm WINNING the race!

Anokha - Sounds of The Asian Underground is worth a listen.

I'm not entirely sure what it is yr after, rake. My first assumption - that yr seeking some kind of funky amalgamation of breakzz/kick-drums and sitars/tablas - would suggest you need to check the Anokha stuff and praps the Ninja Tune back-catalogue, but I'm not sure now...

I mean, the question here is: are you after something that's cosmetically *Asian/Indian* or are you interested in music produced by Asians/Indians, but inspired by the dance-floor/modern electronica scene?

If it's the latter, it'd be far more rewarding to check out Asa, Cornelius, Mona Trona or, God, I dunno, Plus-Tech Squeeze Box.

you should definitely check out Rishi Rich. fantastic.

Panjabi MC and Punjabi Hit Squad are good too. i believe the latter have a Desi show on BBC Radio or something....

oh, and Talvin Singh was part of Tabla Beat Science. check them out, too.

For a kick off: Nitin Sawnhey. I really liked Beyond Skin, not sure what everyone else made of it, and it's a bit untrendy, but it worked for me. I'd also suggest checking out Ananadar Shankar for some Indian funk... which is wonderful in its own bizarre, twisted way.

I guess, yeah, I'm after sitar combinbed with fresh breaks - even thought I'm not quite sure what they are.

Basically, I'm in a city in Australia where the number of stores which sell good music can be counted on one hand. So I need the names of acts and what not before I walk in there because the staff are usually no help.

I already listen to stuff like Cornelius and Ninja Tunes, but it's not what I after this time around.

Where are you? Not Sydney?

Melbourne. There's only a a couple of indie stores which cater to electronic music and the staff seem understandably unknowledgable when you ask about anything that isn't their thing.
