Brown Jenkin

Not sure if this should go with Books or Creation, but I'm writing some lyrics for my Lovecraft based black metal band about none other than that little creep Brown Jenkin from the short story "Dreams in the Witch-House." If you don't recall, he's a rat with the bearded face of an old man and four tiny human hands instead of claws. I'm wondering if he was a creature used exclusively by Lovecraft, or if there are any references made to him in other sources. Thanx to anyone who can help me uncover more about this mischivious fucker. I will not hold you responsible for the madness which may very possibly ensue.

I think it was just Lovecraft. here's a quote for those of you unfamiliar with the cunning little bastard:

"...no larger than a good sized rat and quaintly called by the townspeople, 'BROWN JENKIN' - seemed to have been the fruit of a remarkable case of sympathetic herd-delusion, for in 1692, no less than eleven persons had testified to glimpsing it. There were recent rumors, too, with a baffling and disconcerting amount of agreement. Witnesses said it had long hair and the shape of a rat, but that it's sharp-toothed, bearded face was evilly human while it's paws were like tiny human hands. It took messages betwixt old Keziah and the devil, and was nursed on the witch's bliid, which it sucked like a vampire. It's voice was a kind of loathsome titter, and could speak all languages. Of all the bizarre monstrosities in Gilman's dreams, nothing filled him with greater panic and nausea than this blasphemous and diminutive hybrid..."

speaking of this, how does writing Cthulhu mythos stuff work, exactly? i know a lot of people do it, but i was always curious as to how the legalities worked...

More rat-related horror can be found in Bram Stoker's very spooky short story "The Judge's House".

Well, that was irrelevant.

All of Lovecraft's work is public domain, so Cthulhu and the Necronomicon and so on are too.

A rapid search indicates the presence of at least two other metal bands who have used Brown Jenkin as the title for a track. But since they are none other than the mighty Golnar and, erm, Rudimentary Peni, I think you can feel fairly safe in creating your work of dark wonder.
