At age 77 Cuba's Queen of Salsa dies...

Is it me or has there been a disturbing loss of musical greats this year?

Credited for enticing mainstream audiences to salsa music, Cruz lit the fuse of a Latin craze that persists today. She launched her career in 1950 as the singer for popular Havana band La Sonora Matancera, regarded as the Latin equivalent of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The group defected before Fidel Castro seized power in 1959, and Cruz never returned to her homeland.

Dammit. It was bad enough Tito was called to that great big mambo club in the sky. Now Celia?

Seems to me she's our third in the bad-luck-comes-in-threes after Hepburn and old Barry. This is just getting really depressing.

Bad luck's working overtime...

Compay Segundo, who was nearing 90 when he shot from obscurity to worldwide fame with the "Buena Vista Social Club," has died in Havana. He was 95.
