I just wanted to address the rise in importance "world music" is having in the American music scene.
For example Jamacian dancehall has blown up as of late, in particular Sean Paul. In this case dancehall has been on the edge of American mainstream for awhile with acts like Shabba Ranks and Super Cat scoring decent hits in the past.
However the rise in dancehall is less surprizing when realise how similar dancehall and and hip hop are (infact Cool Herc who is considered the creator of hip hop is from Jamacia, as are Slick Rick, Biggie and others)
Whats more surprising is the more Indian influence in American Music. The first the first song I can think of with an Indian sound is "big pimpin'" produced by Timbaland. After that success came the DJ Quick produced "so contagious"(i think thats what its called) now you have hip hop acts hooking up with actual Indian musicians with a hip sensibility- such as Jay-Z working with Punjabi MC on "Beware of the Boys"
My question is why is this occuring? Is it just American producers/artists stealing material from other cultures to make a novelty song or is it a synthesis of two different musical cultures? And why now as opposed to later? |
