Sigil Help for a beginner

Hi, I'm fairly new to this magic thing, having been introduced to it through the letter columns in a bunch of Invisible comics that I bought a few months ago. Does anybody have any practical advice on the business of forgetting intent? To use the example that's in Invisibles 1.16, if I make a sigil attempting to win the lottery, I need to buy a ticket. But surely the intent is present when purchasing the ticket, thus destroying the sigil? Is there something I'm missing?

There's no such thing as sigils being destroyed by not forgetting the intent. It's never fucked with any of my sigils, and I'm not sure the origin behind it. Just ignore it, the rule of forgetting intent, that is.

I was under the impression that forgetting the intent meant that you could allow *whatever* to do its work. Obviously, you need to be aware of a certain amount of intent in the first place, to make it all happen, but I thought that the forgetting was meant to act like not picking a scab - allowing the body (or in this case, the universe/magick/whatever) to get on with the task at hand without one's grubby psychic fingers clawing at it all the time...

If you get so obsessed with forgetting the intent, it's going to be counterproductive. However, if you stop focusing on wanting the intent to work, your conscious mind will get out of the way and let magic do its thing.

At several times in my life I've been lonely and wanted a partner, and while I didn't actually enchant for one the strength of my desire (and the erotic nature of it) was sufficiently magical to have effect. It only did, however, once I had decided:

in the first case, that I would find someone when I was ready and not before, and just to be satisfied with that

in the last case, that I was actually in a really bad place to be in a relationship, and that having a partner would hold me back in numerous ways.

As you can guess, in the latter case, the relationship that followed didn't last long.

So I'd second Jack's statement-- not only ignore the rule, but ignore the intent. Once you've done what you're going to do, leave it alone. Relax. Think about other things that hold your attention. Go to the beach, the movies, what not. But on a subconscious level, recognize the opportunities connected with your work. Buy the lottery ticket as if on impulse. Furthermore, if you've enchanted for money, pay attention-- if a flyer for a contest with cash prizes catches your eye, there might be some point to entering.

As I understand it you only need to forget (or let go of) the intent at the moment of the charging. Write your spell, sigilize it, do the working, and as your focus narrows to the point of maximum intent, let go of the meaning of the sigil. Just stare at the damn thing without any conscious effort to attach meaning to it. It doesn't matter if you remember it afterwards. How else would you know if it worked??

As far as letting it work its course without stressing about it, this is analogous to the Taoist notion of Not-doing.

Lots of different methods of achieving gnosis/no-mind whatever.... Get into Yoga and meditation, read Austin Osman Spare or any reputable Peter Carroll or Phil Hine book...... Practice......... Do Liber MMM, in Liber Kaos, if you want - just do it......

Thanks everybody, for your helpful responses. And the wanking method may help prevent prostate cancer, so it's all good :-)
