Humph. Have scary-ass day of job interview today, involving having to give a lecture aimed at 2nd-year undergraduates to an audience made up entirely of professors at 11:30am (then I go off to attend the first day of a conference I'm co-organizing); then I have the interview at 5pm. Have no idea what they are going to ask me. Got no sleep last night due to replaying the moment at the dinner-for-shortlisted-candidates when I mentioned the vomitorium and the Head of Latin looked pained and said "That's a myth".

vibeguns, ready, aim, fire (please)...

Yikes - your very own gazpacho soup moment... poor thing.

You'll be just *great*, I'm sure. Best of luck, and many good vibes coming your way from me and my two over-heated Border terriers (no, that's not some sort of weird euphemism). Go get 'em!

Oh look. You're lecturing again. I particularly like the way that, when you lecture, you're very happy and content and pleased with yrself and nothing ever really seems to bother you, and you don't ever swear that you'll never ever do it again...

Good luck dear

KCC, I was just thinking about that guy yesterday. He used to frequent the Sainsburys in Camden Town saying the same thing (and nothing but).

And I thought this thread was going to be about sex toys (yes, I know Bizunth, some things never change). So here, have some good vibes.

Hmm, well if you feel yourself folding than you could just imagine Hawking in Stringfellows singing Satisfaction. Sorry, I'm listening to the radio.

Much luck Deva.

Kill 'em all, Deva. In the good sense. Not the sense that involves washing the blood out of your shirt and then prison.

thank you thank you!

_pin - I know. I will, needless to say, not be heartbroken if I don't get the job (just penniless, homeless & starving).

lecture went, um, okay-ish, I think: they laughed at my jokes and when they asked me questions I just opened my mouth & what came out sounded like I knew what I was saying...

twenty minutes till the interview. have no idea what that will be like, but since I really don't think I'm going to get the job, and I don't think they're out to humiliate me, there's not too much riding on it. (Just twenty-two thousand pounds... no, must not think such thoughts...)

thank you all again, you are lovely.

interview was okay, they didn't humiliate me: but no job pour moi. Never mind. Got a nice/scary email from the head of latin saying he thought I came across academically v well but didn't position myself right for a classics dept. & he'd be happy to give me some tips for the future, so next time I feel strong enough to deal with criticism, that'd probably be really useful.

so, yeah, it went as well as it possibly could have short of actually getting the job (bye-bye life of luxury, hello TA hell**)

**just enough hours to make sure I can't temp for a living; not enough hours to actually pay my rent. oh joy.

Sorry to hear about that Deva. I have some idea of what it is like and I can only say that perseverance, bordering on twisted obsession, is your friend.

Sorry, hon. Being in the same boat, I totally know how you feel. But I do have an inkling that you'd be better off in a less trad realm than classics. Don't let the bastards get you down, y'hear?

On the other hand, Classics needs you. But he's right - you could do excellent work in other disciplines also. And there will be other jobs. And, in the meantime, there will be money....

Sax: yeah. I'm staying on GP for another year, till I submit**: then who knows? I'd like to stay here, but since there are no jobs anywhere in teh world I'll probably end up in Alaska or something. Humph.

**the PhD, that is. Not just in general.

I just realized that a person started a thread about an interview to become a *Classics professor* with the adjectival phrase "scary-ass."

Which, frankly, rocks.

As does Deva generally.

Didn't get around to vibing you while you were actually doing the interview, deary. You want me to send some back in time for you, or should I be vibing in the direction of the present/future?
