Website turns tables on government officials

Annoyed by the prospect of a massive new federal surveillance system, two researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are celebrating the Fourth of July with a new Internet service that will let citizens create dossiers on government officials.

The system will start by offering standard background information on politicians, but then go one bold step further, by asking Internet users to submit their own intelligence reports on government officials -- reports that will be published with no effort to verify their accuracy.

GIA website.

Mission tatement:

To empower citizens by providing a single, comprehensive, easy-to-use repository of information on individuals, organizations, and corporations related to the government of the United States of America.

To allow citizens to submit intelligence about government-related issues, while maintaining their anonymity. To allow members of the government a chance to participate in the process.

Logical, yeah?

But this should become a worldwide phenomenon, instead of being concentrated purely on U.S. officials.

Arguable. 'No effort made to verify'. So you can say what the hell you like, whoever you are, and we'll print it. I'm not sure I like that at all - it just adds to the noise level. A site which checked facts, now - and not by calling the relevant political spokesperson and asking nicely - that would be a thing.

At the same time, it's already the case that many good people shy away from entering politics because they have no desire to have their lives examined in detail. I know I wouldn't - there's nothing very shameful in my past or present, but any number of things I don't want splattered across page nineteen of a tabloid.
