As I've said, it seems to me that CM is a blending of magick with modernist ideas like Dadaism - so I look for an equavalent blending with more recent philosophical traditions.
Well, I’d like to know what you’ve found, Nick – what have you been looking at? I get more from looking at Eastern traditions – seem to have a grasp on some areas that Chaos Magick (as it’s presented) doesn’t address ie. If CM is “just” about satisfying desires, some elements of these traditions looks at why we desire in the first place, and the dissatisfaction or satisfactions thereof. Note I say “as presented” there because I’m pretty convinced that once you get stuck into practice, it doesn’t work in that way. I don’t think it is a simple “do my sigil = get what I want = next sigil” kind of thing.
As to the whole danger/“playing in shallow water” thing, echoing AoG, I think this is a question of experience pretty much – just the same as belief in magick. The first time you do the LBRP or whatever, you may well feel like a bit of a tit messing around in the spare bedroom, but after a while this might take on meaning and significance for you. Any beliefs about the dangers or otherwise of magick should surely arise in the same way? – out of one’s own experience. I recall some of the early books I read (WE Butler etc) were filled with all sorts of warnings that if you didn’t spend a month doing this exactly right your head would explode or whatever – I think these kind of prescriptions like this are there to be tested and challenged. |
