Following and Chris Nolan

its, time for another movie that a lot of you haven't seen, following, directed by Christopher Nolan. its about a aspiring writer that decides that the best way to come up with material is to follow people going about their daily business and it goes fine until he breaks one of his own rules of following people. go and see it right now and tell me if it sucks or not. its got a lovely structure to it that I think you'll all be enamored by.

The structure (po-mo film noir by way of David Mamet) was certainly very clever, but as ever with Nolan's films I found it a little too detached to be truly lovable. I interviewed him a couple of months ago and he was very nice, if a little secretive about Batman.

can you be a little more specific? detached in what way? secretive about batman?

He's directing Batman Year One, and he wouldn't play ball when I asked him about who was going to be cast in the lead. (The Rumour now is that it'll be Ashton Kutcher. I shit you not.)

Detatched as is less interested in the emotional impact of his story than the structure of the narrative itself - even though his films are subjective as hell you don't really get to know any of his characters at all. I'm not dissing him though, any more than I'd diss Mamet for House of Games or Welles for Citizen Kane.

House of Games wasn't bad at all...

Neither was Following...
not sure of it was the "structure" or the Black & white... but at times it was difficult to differentiate the various charactors... But as we see by the end of the film that was part of the point eh?

I thought it was darren aronofsky directing year one and it was in collaboration with frank miller. or was that just my mind messing with me?

that's what I heard too, MM.

I had a fellow artist loan me a copy of Following, and I haven't watched it yet. I'll do so sooner rather than later and let you know what I think....

Nah, Aronofsky's been off the project for a while now.

Which is a shame. I remember one shot in Requiem for a Dream which struck as being very Batman like when I first saw it. Something about the main character curling up in his bed in emotional pain thinking about his mother? I can't remember the shot very clearly, and I'm not sure if I have the emotional strenght right now to actually watch that film again.

If you like that, I'll tell you another. He's writing BmY1 with David Goyer, who scripted the Blade films.

And yes, obviously that is the point, it's just not necessarily my thing. Like I said, I'm not dissing him.
