... cross posted from a thread in comics...

The difference between spam and the honest attempts of self promotion by board members is increasingly becoming blurred... I think the rule of thumb should be if people are willing stick around and post on threads about their particular area of interest there should be no problem with them promoting their own sites

eroom nala has contributed to a variiety of promethea related threads which I think raises this thread out of the realms of simple spam-

thoughts?

If you're posting a link to your own site with no attempt to initiate discussion there's no good reason why that link can't go in Conversation or another, pre-existing and relevant thread. Common sense, really. It shows how individual moderators approach similar situations from completely different angles, but if a similar thread to the one currently being discussed cropped up in Music - and as long as it wasn't too obvoiusly dead-end spam - I'd contact the poster responsible and ask them to move their ad to a thread that covered the same material, providing that one existed. If it didn't, it's probably a mod's job to open the new thread up so that it actually becomes about something.

Or delete it. I don't think it's too difficult to tell the difference between intentional spam and the slightly clumsy first posts.

I agree. I think eroom nala's providing links to interesting stuff. Perhaps a better definition of spam is needed here?

There's a previous example here which might be useful in this discussion (and it looks like the poster got stuck in to other thrteads, so kudos to him and apologies from me).

There was a particularly obvious piece of junk mail in Music a while ago for a 'Net radio station which would have been a good contrast to these others, but seems to have been wiped out in a previous forum purge.

A) Eroom Nala isn't a regular poster at Barbelith, to my knowledge, but knows that quite a few Comics Forum regulars like his site, so he's really just being helpful--while gratifying his own desire for positive attention from complete strangers, of course, but I don't think any of us are in a position to criticize that--in letting us know when there's an update. He's just using the most direct, convenient method, rather than searching out his old thread. Jess Nevins has done the same thing--I think a bit of the irritation with Eroom is that English is not his first language and to some people he comes across as a bit of a geek. I imagine a bit of moderation to morph his threads together or whatever, along with a polite explanation and a link to the new thread, would resolve the situation to everyone's satisfaction.

B) Do we really have to go through these define-and-conquer routines all the time?

Is that what this is? I thought it was an attempt to preperly define what constitutes spam on this message board in line with the recent addition of new moderators and questions about moderation in general.

I may have been a little snotty. I apologize.
