Today I woke up and fired up my loyal iBook to check my email. And immediately after startup, the display started to get vertical and horizontal lines, then began to flicker and flash, then completely disappeared. No display. Twice now I've tried figuring out if there's anything I could do via keyboard to fix it (zapped the PRAM, et al) but after several restarts, I've still a laptop without a completely dead display. Which sucks because I hear the little bastard's hard drive spinning.

Anybody know any kung-fu techniques other than me wheeling it into the local repair store and having them remove my kidneys for payment? Apple's repair is financial brutality as it is much less when you barely have enough money to eat with.

Did you take a look at the connection of the video card to the motherboard? If you don't break any seals, etc. I think it won't void the warranty. Best to check on that though. I'm pretty sure that it is soldered on and cannot be removed replaced like an upgradable one could, but it could have shorted and you might be able to locate the spot it occurred at.

This happened to an older apple clone of mine and it was the port connection for the external monitor. After sending it out for a motherboard fix, they didn't bother actually replacing that part. It ended up coming back with the same problem. I had a tech swap out the board for me and it still runs to this day.

Did you happen to jar it at all? Curious to see if you can find an outward cause of the problem.

Do you still have a warranty/Applecare on it. Any of these if still standing should do a fine job of helping you out.

Sorry to hear about your mess.
