Cleaning up moderators...

Tom Coates

So that we have a vague idea where the distributed moderation scheme is failing us, I've decided to do a bit of a clean up of the moderators and I'm taking away moderator status people who haven't undertaken a moderation action or voted on one in the last month (and from a couple of people who've only been able to do one or two). This is in NO WAY a comment on people's performance in the long-term - the vast majority of people who are no longer going to be moderators have done STIRLING work over the last few months / years - but it's obvious that they don't have the time at the moment to keep the system ticking over effectively.

What I hope to achieve by this is to see which fora need new moderators in them, and hopefully we'll know that in less than an hour and can start talking about who will take any available places within them. Anyone who has had moderator status taken away should feel absolutely free to suggest themselves for the role again if they want to - but I'm assuming that the vast majority of ex-moderators are basically too busy for it and won't mind at all...

Later in the day I'll also be saying thank you to particularly diligent and responsible moderators who have kept the pile of moderation actions down so low.

RIght - that was NOT an effortless process (or a clear one - particularly around Art & Design where there really isn't anything to moderate anyway) and I'm fairly sure I've accidentally unmodded some people who should not have been unmodded. Nonetheless we now have a MORE accurate list of the active moderators in each forum of the board, which means that it's time for people to start expressing their interest if they want to reclaim positions or be a moderator in another section.

I think there are a few places in desperate need of new mods and one of them is The Switchboard.

I'll moderate the switchboard. I have experience as the former King of Barbelith and I keep strange hours. Consider me volunteered.

Can't claim to give a shit about current affairs or anything approaching politics, but I am online for 5 hours a day with little else to do, so if you need a spare moderator for anything (but especially the Conversation/Creation) consider me available.

I would LOVE to mod the Switchboard. In fact, I'd love it if I could switch over to the Switchboard as I read it all the time and feel more "in the zone" modding over there as opposed to the Head Shop. I could do both, and I could stay on Head Shop, but I'd prefer to do Switchboard.

On the other hand, bear in mind that in the afternoon my "attendance" on the board tends to be erratic, however I do check it every day.

Let me know.

Would like to help, but not sure I'm old enough in Barbelith years and there are people here who are a lot more savvy.

I'm also quite happy, keen even, to mod the Switchboard.

Remember everyone - moderating means more than voting yay or nay - I need people in these forums, keeping things vaguely on track, noticing problems, fixing HTML and the like...

Being jobless, having broadband and one of the more erratic sleeping patterns of Britlith I'd be quite happy to mod anything you wanted me to. Switchboard probably isn't the best idea for practical reasons but anywhere else would be okay.

I would be happy to help, especially in the switchboard...

Weird stuff... according to my profile, and the Switchboard header, I'm still a mod... I still have to power to propose moderation actions. However, when I click on a requested action to "yay or nay", I just get my PMs. Bizarre.

Jub & Anna - I have slots going in Comics (1), Gathering (2), Head Shop (1) and Art & Design (3).

I would be happy to help out moderation in comics and art/design.

Also being UK based (most of the time), jobless and broadbanded, I can help out in the Comics forum.

I was going to bring up Comic mods, only I see I've been beaten to it. I'd be happy to take on the gathering, or even Art and Design, which should encourage me to stop lurking there and start posting more...

I just wanted to mention that I check Barbelith quite often, at all hours of the day on most days, and I haven't been getting very many moderation requests to vote on lately, and when I do, it seems as though as soon as I click the link, it has already been voted on. I'm guessing that Haus and Grant are just really fucking quick on the draw, and are just zapping moderation requests quicker than my DSL connection.

If you rearrange the system then you could have graded mod actions where all mods can do the cheap and easy "I fucked typing my thread" and "the html bites in this thread" tasks which would then leave the assigned mods to ensure the more "forum involved" stuff.

Naturally hat I'm suggesting isn't easy but it would result in better, quicker, easier administration of the board.

Yeah I spend way too much time checking and rechecking this site during most of the day and night. It's almost obsessive.

But look what you can do with someone with OCD! You can put them to work! Like a hamster in a wheel.

Except a hamster that visits the Spectacle far more than he should be legally allowed.

Hello, I'd be a good candidate for Headshop--I frequent it, read most of the threads, and I've already stated that I'd be willing to undertake some moderator duties...

I'd be happy to mod for the convo forum, but like Jub am small in barbeyears, and have no idea about the html-fixing type stuff. But if your stuck then I'd be happy to.

I've put a few of the old-timers in satisfyingly big roles, but I think the Conversation and the Comics forums are a bit OTT for new mods. So the young-in-barbelith-years should probably consider a slightly lighter weight fora...

I'm on Barbelith for good chunks of the day and can handle technical mod stuff like fixing html & voting on actions. I'd be less sure of myself in moderating threads where things are getting nasy, at least at first. I'd happily serve anywhere but the Head Shop, which gives me Head Aches.

Hope I do I do a good job.

It would be nice is moderators in the comics forum would add keywords to the topic abstracts after the threads derail. There are lots of great threads that don't show up in the search function because the thread went in an unexpected direction. The Chuck Austin thread that has nothing to do with Chuck Austin being one example.

I think it's clear that there are problems with the search functionality.

Are we ever going to start clearing out the old topics and archiving them? There doesn't seem to be anything going on with that, and I'd like to do that in the comics section.
