I felt the story was underdeveloped. I could have lasted two issues, at least, with a lot more detective work, and different interactions between the batmen and Planetary. This was almost lame.

On the bad guy's ID
Bruce Wayne
John Black
John Wayne
Ellis tends to do that kind of name games. I do believe Black was meant to be Wayne's equivalent... perhaps pa Wayne was a commie?
The suit is a reference I can't get. It does look familiar, but I do not pin it.

The batman incarnations:

Miller's Year one
Miller's Dark Knight returns
Adam West TV version
Neal Adams's late 70's
late 30's Shadow influenced

The last one, I do not know

And John Black is dressed as an 80's pop bad guy, that must mean something

I agree that the sequel to DK wasn't lame. I loved it...funniest thing Miller's done in ages, but I don't think the vast majority of people who bought it saw it as a humor book. Miller sure did, tho.

As for this comic...I keep remembering the review for Ms. Mystic #2 by Neal Adams in the 80's.

"Was it worth the wait? Of course not, nothing could be."

It had been so long since reading a Planetary story that the tossed off character bits didn't really resonate as they would have if we'd had a new issue within recent memory. But, as a way to get people re-interested in the book before it starts again, it was fun.

And the multiple Batman schitck worked, but after seeing it four times in the past few years, let's not ever use it again, shall we?

Did anyone else find the Snow/Jakita interaction to be a lot more Spider/Yelena, as opposed to the normal Planetary take?

And while interesting and fun, the whole crossover was just Ellis taking the piss, didn't feel like it was really thought our beyond the different versions of the batman. While the first few pages were really good, aside from rotationg(no pun intended) through the different version of the batman, it got a bit tiring and I was waiting for something more from the plot. And ANOTHER stab at the batman origin past? *groan* Sorry, it was great to see Planetary back, but I came away feeling that it just wasn't as dense as it could be, especially since it's been a while since we saw the team, and with an otherwise inconsequential storyline.

reviving the thread because I only read the comic today. it was a very nice and quick laugh [for all the rasons you guys already put], but only if you bought the book second hand. it's no surprise this PLANETARY crossovers get to be in the top dollar ranking when released. a bit too expensive for the content, in my opinion.

and the last Batman version looks a lot like George Clooney in one panel; the Gotham behind him look like Schumacher's too.
