I am having fun (tm) attempting to update my OS10.2.1 to 10.2.6 (ie no fun at all.)

After downloading the 84-odd meg package from apple through apple update nothing happened - i looked on my hard drive and found files looking like they should be run to update my OS only when i attempt to run them i get a funny(tm) message saying that "the bill of materials for this item was not found"

can anyone tell me what this means and or give me any tips for updating my os through a 56k modem?

IO would really rather not have to try and download another 84 odd meg anytime soon...

I did it today through downloading the Combo Update from the website, rather than using Software Update. If you want, Sleaze, I can probably mail you a CD. I just ran the Installer, rebooted, and it all worked OK. PM me if you need the CD... got no idea what that error message is, but there and again, I'm an OSX newbie...

I recall that Software Update is a piece of shite; if possible, download standalone updaters - that'd be my advice, useless to you now as it may be.

Does anybody know if the just recently announced Panther (10.3) is going to be freely available for those who have 10.2.6? Surely they won't charge $129 for such a tiny little upgrade?

No, it won't, yes they will.

You're an Apple user, you're supposed to be have that sort of money and want to pay it. In fact if you haven't pre-ordered already you lose your Mac Hugger badge.

um... Panther a "tiny" update? Must have missed the tons of great features that was said about it up to and including Monday. Did you think Jaguar was a small update?

It will be $129.00 and it's one of the few software items I make sure I plunk some bucks down for.

Combo updates are the best unless you upgrade consistently in the cycle and have broadband. And, you should backup before you do it. In fact, a clean install is really the best way to go every year or so. Keeps things intact...

Bah, the features so far are not all that impressive. Where are the piles, eh? All I see are a few new programs and a metallised Finder.

Metallic Finder bad like fucking your Mum is bad. Just no, Apple... LEAVE IT ALONE.

Ugh.

Ditto. And yes, I don't think it's too much to ask to not have to pony up for what is, in fact, a minor system update. Jaguar was something that should have been handed out from the get-go, given that X was riddled with flaws early on. Paying for it is highway robbery. And I've been with Apple long enough (System 6. On my SE) to know this how they screw their customers. First on the hardware, then on the software.

A major system update, such as from 9 to X I will glady pay for. But given that minor system updates for Windows are offered freely via the manufacturer's website, I absolutely refuse to pay the $129. If it's worthwhile, I've got a friend who will find me a copy of Panther when it comes out.
