Is it time to find a new vet for my aged kitty????

General background - I have a fourteen and a half year old cat who's in failing health. I love him dearly, don't want to say goodbye to him, but much more strongly want to keep him comfortable and happy (even if it shortens his life - I'm going for quality rather than quantity).

He's diabetic and I've only had moderate success in controlling his blood glucose, has elevated liver enzymes and a high likelihood of inflammatory bowel disease (although I'm not willing to have him 'scoped to confirm the diagnosis).

The symptoms of IBD in cats can include diarrhea/soft stools and a tendency to deposit them outside the litterbox, both of which are happening now. The cat has also lost a lot of weight between the diabetes and not digesting his food properly, and spends a fair amount of time wandering around the apartment making unhappy noises (although it doesn't sound like he's in big pain).

The vet recommended a course of Flagyl for the IBD, and it didn't seem to do much... am feeding him a sulfa-based antibiotic now for the same reason and the first week doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I just spent two days playing phone tag with the vet trying to talk to her about medication for pain control - I want to see if that takes care of the unhappy noises. Instead, she recommended Elavil, which is usually used for behavior modification and bladder disease... It has mild anti-inflammatory properties and sedative qualities, but does nothing for pain control.

This doesn't seem like the most appropriate course of action to me....
Opinions??

It all depends on what you believe a cat is, a sentient being or a mindless animal. i also have an aging cat, about 10, and she hasn't shut up complaining for a day in her life. i love her dearly, and she purrs when she's around me, but she makes varied sounds all the time, they sound like unhappy sounds, but i believe it to be an attempt at speech. Cats know we love them, and they trust us. whatever your heart says to do about the cat is probably best, even if it clashes with a vet's opinion. I wish you and your cat the best.
