Next weekend is the release of 28 Days Later in the U.S., and since my girlfriend has categorically refused to see it with me, I thought I'd try to organize a Barbemeet around it. New York needs zombies. As well as beer (or the alcoholic beverage of your choice).

We can attend this movie, which our UK brethren seem to have greatly enjoyed, and then go to a bar and drink. Maybe we can drink Zombies, if someone can tell me what goes into them. If you're not interested in the movie, you can come to drink, or vice-versa.

I'm thinking Sautrday, June 28th, at a location and time TBD.

We can organize this around who wants to attend - in Brooklyn or Manhattan, most likely. Who can come? Any suggestions as to theaters/bars?

A practical quesion: why does no onein zombie movies ever just set the zombies on fire? If one were to stay out in the open, rather than getting trapped in some wooden shack, one could surely outrun the zombie till its tendons &c burned up. Really, they aren't so scary.

So, yeah, I'm down, assuming I haven't sold my liver (ormy brain!) for rent money.

Y'know, around the time they must've been writing this, I wrote a half a script for a zombie movie loosely based on Man Bites Dog.

I'm interested -- where will it be showing in Manahattan? Only indie theaters or mainstream theaters too?

Lionheart
20:44 / 20.06.03
I'm up for it.

Also why you don't set zombies on fire is because it'll take a while for them to burn up. So instead of having normal zombies coming at you you'll have flaming zombies coming after you. When flesh burns it cooks. But it doesn't dissapear. So you gotta wait for a few hours for the zombies' flesh to turn to ash. Speaking of Ash, I'm planning on buying a shotgun because I live within a mile of a huge cemetary.

Why don't you set zombies on fire?

You've obviously never played Timesplitters 2.

No, I haven't. Lionheart is probably right--I'm thinking of mummies, which are all dried up from their countless aeons of brooding slumber. Still, even a fresh, gooey zombie is gonna be pretty slow, especially if it's on fire with its eyeballs melting and its tendons tightening up and everything. As long as you stay outdoors, you should be all right.

Listen, all I'm saying is, if you fun afoul of some zombies, don't panic.

The film will be playing at several major theatres in Manhattan.

I won't be able to make the movie if it's on Saturday. My partner leaves town for 3 weeks at 3pm so I'll want to spend some time together before they go and then I have work from 6-12:30am Sunday I could do after 5pm.

You guys missed out. There was a sneak peek a week ago. I would have gone but it played in Toronto and skipped right over Ottawa to Montreal. Bastards. Don't they know I'm King Zombie?

In one of the scenerios in All Flesh Must Be Eaten, the zombie rpg, the only way you can destroy the undead is by burning them. This results in all sorts of careless fires and flaming zombies burning the major cities to the ground. If you were in a rickety old farmhouse, with fire-zombies knocking at your door, I don't think you'd have shelter for long.

I think the movie is actually opening wide, so we should have a few theaters to choose from.

If Sunday is better for everyone else, that's fine, but I'm definitely not able to come then. I might be able to do Friday the 27th, but that's the night it opens. The next weekend is a holiday, too.

Fridge, are you coming to NYC? Or are you just enticed by the Zombies?

These zombies are pretty fast, people.

What about Tuesday night? Thursday night?

Matthew Fluxington
13:38 / 22.06.03
Saturday is the best day for me. Friday and Sunday aren't good.

Let's just do Saturday, Todd.

As for Manhattan Vs. Brooklyn, I think we should stay in Manhattan for this one. There will be more theatres in Manhattan showing the film, allowing us a lot more leeway in planning. Showtimes/theatres haven't been announced just yet, but they will in a day or two. I'll keep on top of that.

I've been aiming to go to NYC one weekend and this sounds like a good opportunity. I haven't really sorted out any details, though.

Is the beer before the movie? During the movie, 40 oz. in backpack high school style? After the movie?

I'm not sure I can afford to come, but I'll at least look forward to reading about it later.

My main problem is that I have nowhere to sleep and couldn't get back home the same day, which is a bit of a fucker. I could wander the streets all night moaning "BRAINS" but it looks like someone might set me on fire even though that would be the wrong thing to do.

w1rebaby
15:40 / 24.06.03
Okay, Qalyn has kindly offered me somewhere to sleep, though he obviously doesn't realise how much I smell.

So what's the plan then? Will we need to book in advance?

Ethan Hawke
15:55 / 24.06.03
Showtimes aren't available yet, but current thinking seems to be the Union Square area.

As far as booking in advance, I'm not going to take it upon myself to order a block of tickets or something like that, since Barbelith people (myself a supreme example) can be sketchy about showing up on time.

However, once a theater/time has been determined, I'd suggest that each person buy tickets in advance via visiting the box office early/moviephone.com, especially if it's Union Square, because those theaters tend to sell out early. I can't count the number of times I've wanted to go see a movie on a Saturday night and have had it sold out.

So, hopefully by tomorrow we can find out a time/place. I think the Voice might have listings later today.

I'd like to apologize to Caleigh that we can't accomodate her this time, since everyone else seems to be able to do it on Saturday. We'll come up with something else real soon.

You are sweet to even mention it Todd, hope the show rocks, I'll check it out sometime soon.

Matthew Fluxington
15:59 / 24.06.03
We're still waiting for theatres to announce showtimes. Hopefully by tomorrow, that information will be available to us. I've been on it, don't worry. We're planning on selecting a theatre in downtown Manhattan which will allow us to order tickets in advance online. Once we settle on a theatre/showtime, I highly recommend ordering a ticket online or at the theatre's box office at least a day or two in advance. There is a good chance that the show will set out since this is a new release on a Saturday night.

Damnit.

I so want to tag along. Like the ad says: what else do you know that improves the taste of Zombies AND Beer? barbelith.

But I'm going to be out of town.

Ah, well. Don't set fridge on fire.

Bump a dump dump.

No showtimes for the UA theater in Union Square yet (on Moviephone at least), but it is playing at the UA theater on Court Street in Brooklyn (as well as the Pavillion in Park Slope, but you can't buy tickets online there (I think)), which usually has the same movies playing.

12:45 / 25.06.03
The Pavillion is a dirty little place and maybe out of the way for many, but it's likely to be less crowdedly evil. I mean, it'll still be crowded, probably, but with a less aggravating sort of person.

Ethan Hawke
12:53 / 25.06.03
You don't love the luxurious Purple Velvet seats at the Pavillion? It ~is~ just a few blocks up the hill from Buttermilk, though. And I feel really cool when I go to Buttermilk because there's no signage out front. It must be exclusive, right?

Matthew Fluxington
13:26 / 25.06.03
Court Street: That's an acceptable location since it is easily accessable on several major subway lines.

Pavillion in Park Slope: definitely not, it's too far out of the way.

Matthew Fluxington
13:32 / 25.06.03
Okay.

Showtimes have been announced.

UA Union Square is the best choice, and tickets can be purchased online from Fandango.

I say we go for the 7 PM show on Saturday night. These are the available options, excluding matinees:

4:45 PM, 7 PM, 7:30 PM, 9:45 PM, 10:15 PM, 12:30 AM, 1 AM

Since I have to be on a train leaving at either 12 PM or 1:20, the last two shows are totally unacceptable for me.

Let's please make a decision on this within the next few hours so that we can buy the tickets today.

There's no way I can buy tickets today. I am, however, pathologically early for everything, & don't mind standing in line. Is it really gonna be that busy?

Let me throw my vote in for 7 at Union Sq.
