I'm planning to go away for one year from September. This is all very exciting. Unfortunately I have one big problem that needs solving.
What am I going to do with my two cats?
They are currently lodging with my ex, in the house that I have still not managed to sell to him completely. I thought that he would kindly continue to care for them, thus allowing me to embark upon my great adventure.
HA. No chance. He wants to make things as difficult as possible.
So I need suggestions, ideas, inspiration, and I'll let slip the odd snide comment. See, aren't I generous?
I can only really consider leaving the country if I feel sure they are going to be well loved and cared for. Time is running out. HALP!

I think Punji Steak has a very similar problem... maybe between you you guys could find someone with a REALLY big house who loves cats?

Are these virtual cats? They live elsewhere, someone else looks after them, you're about to depart for God knows how long? Ganesh is shouting "glass them"... That would be the Barbelith option.

Have you approached your equivalent of The Cat Protection Society? There are usually a number of animal welfare kinds of places around, so may be one in your area would have some suggestions for you.

And Ganesh is just fibbing about the glassing .... you are aren't you????

Yes, angel, G's cat-glassinbg remarks are always a wind up, particularly when delivered with his own fluffy lovecat wrapped around his neck, as in this instance.

It's your timescale, Mr Messy, that may prove to be the problem. People who want and like cats usually already have some and it might be easier if your two could adapt to life with other cats around.

angel's is a good suggestion. Those guys would be likely to bust a gut to see your two are happily rehomed. Otherwise, most vet's practices will have notice boards where people can advertise for rehoming and there are people who would prefer mature cats to kittens since they're likely to be less destructive around the house and demand less attention. The thing about those boards is they'll be seen by people who may have a cat-shaped hole in their lives after their own has met with fatal misfortune.

Hope you haven't already glassed 'em or this latest feline counsel may be superfluous.

Of course, you could ask of the ex-partner that he either look after the cats or gets out of the still-partially-yours house, although that might be considered going nuclear...

Now, if it was dogs, y'see, I'd be more than happy. And if my flatmates disagreed (which they probably wouldn't, to be fair) then I'd have a bunch of dogs to set on 'em!!!

Seriously, both angel's and Haus' ideas make sense. Although I guess the fact that it's worrying you means that Haus' idea's already been either tried or thought through and is a non-starter.

The ex thing is much more complicated than it should be, and I should probably have gone nuclear a long time ago. Still, I'll check the cat protection society thingy.
Ta for all the sage words.

Actually over the weekend one of my aunts got in touch. She is the Cat Woman of Shropshire, and would gladly rescue my cats from me. I'm a little worried about the journey, and the fact that they'll have to get used to living with about 8 other felines. However, I know that they'll be loved.
Methinks I'm far too anxious about this. Surely cats adapt much like us humans.

I'm cat sitting this week while the ex is on holiday. Its pussy paradise I tell you.

As CM says I'm in the same predicament, except I have 4 of the little rascals. My mother-in-law has said that if we can't find anyone else she would look after them, but as she has 3 cats of her own she would get her husband to build an outdoor pen for them, so they wouldn't upset her cats! Well, it all sounds a bit Camp X-Ray to me. Surely my cats have rights under the Geneva Convention? Needless to say I'm not keen on this plan. They haven't even considered heating for the pen, and they live on the side of a mountain in Wales... fer fuxake.

Yikes. Images are flashing before my eyes, of 4 pussies on the side of a snowy mountain huddling together for warmth under a Yak. Is this normal?

No it's not normal! Now I'm worried about yaks too. I didn't know they had yaks in Wales.. how would it get in the pen?

Back to reality, one of my friends has expressed a serious interest in taking over my house for a year, cats included, so things are looking promising. And warmer for the cats too!

Punji- regarding the Geneva Convention thing, I think it all depends on whether they're cats, or illegal felines. (Although I do think your kitties would look cute in orange jumpsuits. I'm sure they have other ideas, though.)
