I've not read any of the books, but I was dragged off to the second film and enjoyed it somewhat. I may read them at some point, then.

Umm...that said, anyone picking up hints from the title?

Order of the PHOENIX?

Eh? Eh?

I'd go out and read it straightaway if Rowling had Harry pull a J.C. on everyone.

Can I request that discussion of the actual book takes place in the thread called 'Harry Potter 5 - Order of the Phoenix' (in this forum) please? Then people who haven't read it yet can speculate away in this one, and those who have can spoil to their hearts' content in the other.

I am currently debating whether to venture out at midnight to buy the thing or not. Oh gawd...

And finally: what is it with all this 'She'll kill Hagrid because she's an unconscious bigot' stuff? Christ, I hate how misanthropic Barbelith can be sometimes.

Gosh. We disagree with Runce. There must indeed be something wrong with us. How tremendously uncommon. How utterly hateful.

Is Barbelith dying?

Bringing this back so we can start the speculation on the last book: Article here.

My guess is that HP dies. Ron and Hermione EITHER both die or neither dies, because, since HP is going to die, Rowling has to have some sort of redeeming "happy" quality to the ending. That having been said, I also bet either Tonks or the werewolf guy will die.

I can't believe Rowling ever thought "I can finish this series without killing off the Boy Who Lived".

Harry kills Snape, realizes he's made a terrible mistake, sacrifices himself. And I'm betting there's a close call with the Dursleys. Most likely Aunt Petunia, who knows more than she lets on.

It'll be really interesting to read that final chapter, given the probable change in style/voice over 17 years.

Why are people so convinced it will be Harry? I think the Potter franchise is far too conventional to risk killing off the main character. Or Ron or Hermione either for that matter.

That said, I don't know who it will be. I can see how killing off Snape only to find that he wasn't bad after all would make a very satisfying (and conventional!) story though.

Voldemort's gonna die—obviously—and Snape, who was Good All Along, is gonna sacrifice himself to make it happen.

There's your two, right there, endy fookin story.

If you've ever read a single interview with JKR in the last like 3 years, she's incessantly talked about killing Harry (or at least the potential for it). I think the reasoning is that so if there is some huge backlash she can be like "I've been saying it for years." Also to prep kids for it, who will be the most shattered.

I should point out that it's two people dying in the final chapter that the article is talking about. It could be a Peckinpahian bloodbath in the preceeding pages for all we know. There's the question of whether Voldermort counts as a major character, and I'm hoping that Snape dies in the middle of the book without Harry knowing how much he owes him and how loyal Snape was to Dumbledore all along.

So I'm going, for now, for Harry and his owl.

...the owl being a major character where Voldemort isn't?

You're high right now, aren't you?

I really don´t care who dies, since I don´t care for most of the characters anymore. I always was especially disappointed with the "evil" ones, since they came across as idiots. Even Voldemort doesn´t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed, and the only one with brains (Snape) is a double agent and of course still works for the deceased Dumbledore. Slitherin is supposed to be made of cunning and scheming people, but they got Goyle and his buddy Broyle or whatshisname. Disappointing.

And the "good" guys aren´t all too bright either. I sometimes suspect, Rowling doesn´t get along with intelligent people. The only Weasley with a career is described as a loner and the black sheep of the family, and the twins who drop out of school are cool and making big bucks.

And do you also think, there are characters, Rowling does not dare to kill (Hermione & Ron, Lupin for example), because she´s afraid the fans will get really mad, and some poor insane stalker soul might give her the Misery treatment?

The Boy (age 12) has nominated either Fred or George Weasley, because they get into the most trouble, and Ginny.

Which I find sort of tempting, given that hey, they're twins, and HARRY MUST SUFFER.

I know, but I always interpreted that as red herrings and publicity stoking. I am happy to stand corrected, but I will be very surprised if she actually goes ahead and does it.

Snape is toast. And I reckon a Weasley will get one in the neck too, b/c there are so damned many of them.

I don't think Rowling would dare off HP. It'd be a huge existantial bummer for children everywhere; "Go to school, learn lots, become a hero, save the world then DIE."

Is it wrong of me to be rooting for this outcome? Whole-heartedly?

I'll go with Snape and Draco, though. I can't see Harry geting it.

No. Harry's sacrifice will redeem the original sin of the series.

Why Harry Potter must finally die.

Tempting to cross post in the Temple due to this tidbit-

"And not too soon for my liking, for the sake of our kids," says Peter Stokes, founder of Salt Shakers, a Christian ministry that deals in spiritual issues such as the power of Satan. "We're concerned with any promotion of witchcraft or paganism, especially to our children. There's no doubt this book has done wonders for getting children interested in spells ... and these things aren't harmless. We've had many stories of people being adversely affected by reading Harry Potter ... nightmares, severe spiritual attacks."

Kill Potter! Save the children from Satan!

Oh, and my speculation is Harry and Snape. The two doesn't count Voldey, Ron and Hermione both have to live as the only romantic element, Harry is obviously going to die, but I wonder who got the reprieve? Hagrid?
