A big, glossy, fuck-off all embracing book of knowledge and depth-of-field charts and explanations...

Written by a genius, to be given to a friend as a lovely birthday present.

Any recommendations?

Here's the perfect book for you, written by a former teacher of mine at Parsons - The Zone System by Brian Lav.

If you want to go for something with more depth and they would like something as dry as the Sahara Desert then the trilogistic bible by Ansel Adams has everything you ever need to know, providing you can understand it.

It is something of a hardcore manual but at the end of the day he did write the book on photography in both the literal and figuarative sense. Even if you don't like his work he provides a flawless basic education with little in the way of creative editorial content.

The trilogy is as follows - The Camera, The Negative and The Print.

As I said, they are dry so if you go for these then I also recommend a tanker of water as well.
