i was visiting my parents recently and my mother is going through that period people go through, when they attempt to make wine using anything they can get their hands on, (rhubarb wine? strawberry wine? mint wine?). Anyway, i got thinking about Mead. I believe its made from honey. But is it nice? is it easy to make? has anyone of you lot ever attempted it? I dont want to get making gallons if its actually really nasty.

Oh, and is the horn to drink it from essential? or is it just cosmetic?

Years ago i had a roomate who was a hardcore Brewmeister. He cooked up some AMAZING beers.

Eventually he got into brewing Mead which, like beer, is easier to brew than wine. He did a pretty good job of it. Tastes different than you would expect.

Drinking horns are hard to come by, many leak. A Goblette may be easier...

have you ever brewed before?

I was thinking about getting into brewing mead, but you need some equipment and a fair amount of space, and I just wasn't willing to put forth the effort. The taste is tricky to describe. It's a pretty lengthy time commitment.

The horn isn't absolutely necessary, a goblet will do, but a big beard is essential. You don't drink mead but quoff it, and you need a beard to catch whatever doesn't get in your mouth...

Actually, it's easier to make than you think. I just used a big jug from the organic apple juice I made the stuff from, and made my own waterlock out of a plastic film canister, a detergent cap and some silicon sealer. It took about 20 minutes. The hardest part was finding a place that sold the right yeast.

If you search memepool for mead, you'll find a site that has a couple great, easy recipes.

My main problem is that I don't really drink, so I had all this sweet stuff I'd take a couple sips of and then put away.

Ladytron is bang on the money there. Mead is definitely quaffed, not drunk. Although I suppose wenches could sup it...

For no good reason I thought this thread was going to be about the horn of Gondor. I have sooooo been reading too much LotR slash.

Well mead is just honey dripped and brewed so it probably woouldn't be out of place Cholister I'm sure it's been used as a metaphor before.

But mead, yikes is that strong stuff Moniack is what I've usually had round a campfire and it's lovely stuff, gives you that nice warm feeling in the bottom of the stomach .

At the last festival I drank it at they had these wonderful little bottles, slightly smaller than hipflask size, perfect to 'sup' from occasionally. Quaffing for me leads into dangerous territory and roaring drunkeness.

I seem to recall that it was your good self who supplied the mead that seemingly sent everyone completely insane at my new years eve party this year. One minute there's a house full of fairly drunk people, a round of mead later, there's a house full of crazy people. Cool stuff.

You definitely have to quaff it, and there definitely have to be several bosomly wenches in the background playing harp like instruments. Oh and ideally there should be a pig or two running around the room. And straw. There should be straw.
