Bored Unto Desperation

We're The Great Old Ones Now

Spare a thought for a friend of mine who has just come back from a trip home she had to make to do some family duties. She got so bored that she saw only one remedy:

Cut hay.

By hand.

You know, for fun.

Any other desperate measures anyone can think of?

Constantly checking Barbelith for PMs because you don't have email access. Ah me ...

Or (worse) constantly checking the Big Brother website because reading the articles about the things the inmates do is considerably more interesting than watching the inmates do things.

www.miniclip.com all passes a few minutes when I'm bored at work it's a gamesite although it does sound like it might be porn.

Making little symmetrical patterns out of piles of coins I find lying around. However, I have been known to fetch the odd 5p from my purse to complete the pattern. Which is worrying.

Taking perfectly good electrical appliances apart (particularly TV remote controls) and scratching away certain connections to see which part won’t work anymore. This is particularly pointless with remote controls:
“Ah-ah this connection leads to connection one, lets scratch it, wow button one don’t work no more, cool”. It’s lucky I don’t get bored too often.

Oooo - I used to love putting nickels on end, balancing them so the next person who sat nearby would knock 'em over. Heads or tails?

Well, I was in a similar position last week to the hay-cutter! Visited my parents (mum is in hospital) and couldn't face my father's PC or internet connection - a 486 with a 28.8 dial-up modem!!! So apart from consuming the contents of his drinks cabinet I actually completed a crossword. OK, it was only the Sunday magazine one but it had around 125 clues in each direction. Well, I'm pleased with myself anyway...

The hay cutting thing reminds me of Russell, who cuts hay for 6 months to understand the mantra "no matter how hard or how fast you run, you're still in the space where you are". Which I agree with.

Today I have mainly being trying to get RSS readers to work. And talk to each other. It was that or the washing up.

When you're bored, go for a walk. Try to go down at least one road you've never been on before. When you think you should turn left, turn right.

Oi! Crosswords are pretty good - they do change your ability to access your vocabulary over time, I think. Although I haven't been able to get into cryptics: what the fuck?

When I find myself bored, I now brew myself a nice cup of tea. It is a lot safer than getting yourself “riled” up.

Cryptic crosswords are a whole different world - the clues are encoded so tightly it's no surprise crossword fiends were carted off to Bletchley to work on the Enigma code during the war.

I am working for eleven hours today. Without email. I am already sizing up the walls for toeholds.

Can someone start some Big Brother slash in the Creation? I'd do it myself but my getting-up-too-early lethargy is too strong. I wish to consume, not create.

ONLY NICE THINGS

Yes - the latter half of today in my shiny new job was a "fun day". Now, I'm a contractor, and as such am not entitled to fun, so it was me and maybe 3 other people in a vast office. No Barbelith, no email (or at least, no desire to abuse the Internet before I work out what the security is like)...I was reduced at one point to the Guardian quick crossword, which is just *silly* quick....

On which note, my morning-start-ravaged body screams pain and sleep. Night all.

I am so bored atm I am actually participating in polls on Yahoo groups. Polls dealing with such things as the sex lives of Elladan and Elrohir. I'm not sure there's a way back from this.

I'm also talking out of my arse on Barbelith a lot more than I used to. Definitely a sign of desperate boredom.

I'm definitely with the idea of going down a road you haven't been before. I like magical mystery tours, preferably at night in a car, but also during the day on foot or public transport.

I'm soooo bored @ work at the moment I'm having to listen to Radio 4, trawl through the latest 'lith posts and I'm also attempting the Times Cryptic Crossword.

So far I've managed to get one clue correct; 19a] Serial no. stamped on aerolplane control (8)

I may tell you the answer later, if I'm feeling particularly charitable.

See, I'm soooo bored I'm even vainly trying to keep you all in suspense.
